Baggsy – Speedmachine Silverstone – 2018

This past weekend saw the launch of Speedmachine Festival at Silverstone. Silverstone is the new home of the British round of World Rallycross, and Speedmachine Festival brings together a whole host of automotive awesomeness.

It was a full operation for Baggsy and the team, with a full rig setup for the weekend. The rig would house fellow Monster Energy team mates Luke Woodham and Rick Van Goethem, with Driftworks driver Tessa Whittock. Plus a special appearance from the guys of Black L’Amour Barbers giving out fresh trims to the Speedmachine crowds. Continue reading Baggsy – Speedmachine Silverstone – 2018

Menard Finishes 14th In Coca-Cola 600 At Charlotte

May 28, 2018

Paul Menard and the No. 21 Menards/Knauf team turned in 600 miles worth of solid performance and came away with a 14th place finish in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

And in doing so, they were able to pay an appropriate tribute to the late Lt. Leevi Barnard, the Patrick County, Virginia, native who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country while serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq on May 21, 2009.

Eddie Wood, who like the late Barnard is from Patrick County, said he was proud of the way his family-owned team represented Barnard, whose name was on the top of the windshield of the No. 21 Fusion.

“I was glad we were able to run well the whole night for Leevi and his family,” Wood said. “His sisters were at the race, and it was the first time they’d been to a NASCAR race. Continue reading Menard Finishes 14th In Coca-Cola 600 At Charlotte

Defending Coca-Cola 600 Winner Austin Dillon’s night hampered by Cut Tire Early at Charlotte Motor Speedway

“I’m a bit mad at myself for racing the No. 3 Coca-Cola Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 so hard, so early in the race. I was battling with the No. 48 car for position and ended up getting loose and hitting the outside wall. That really put a damper on our night. We cut a tire and all of the rubber wrapped around the rear suspension so the hub broke and we had to go to the garage to make repairs. We made it back on the track but we were multiple laps down and really just racing for knowledge at that point. I love Charlotte Motor Speedway and was really looking forward to trying to defend my win here, but it’s on to Pocono Raceway next week.”

Ryan Newman and Liberty National Team See Top-10 Finish Spoiled By Right-Front Hub Issue

“This team is in desperate need of some good luck. Tonight we had another top-10 finish get away from us due to a right-front hub issue with less than 100 laps to go. It’s frustrating. We had a setback on our first stop with a penalty. It dropped us from fourth to 29th. Then to race back in the top 10 and earn stage points in Stages Two and Three, it’s just so disappointing. Overall, it was a solid weekend for us and an improvement in qualifying with the sixth-place starting spot. Racing in the top 5 and top 10 for a majority of the night shows the progress we are making with this Camaro. We just need to get the finishes.”

Dixon Runs Third for Honda at Indianapolis 500

Dixon Runs Third for Honda at Indianapolis 500
• Fuel gambles from Stefan Wilson, Jack Harvey and Oriol Servia come up short
• Come-from-behind efforts from Alexander Rossi, Graham Rahal
• Robert Wickens paces rookie field, finishes ninth

SPEEDWAY, Ind., (May 27, 2018) – Competing pit strategies converged in the final laps of today’s Indianapolis 500, as Scott Dixon and his Chip Ganassi Racing team worked fuel saving to the maximum to finish third, while Alexander Rossi brought his Andretti Autosport Honda to fourth after a series of thrilling outside passes.

On a day of unofficial record high temperatures in the 90’s, a series of yellow flags around the 50-lap mark led roughly half the field to adopt a fuel-saving strategy which netted them one less pit stop during the race, while the other half relied on speed to make up the time difference caused by the extra stop.

The group with the upper hand varied during the middle third of the 200-lap contest, but Honda drivers and teams featured in both.

The fuel-saving group including Dixon, veteran Oriol Servia, second-time “500” starters Stefan Wilson and Jack Harvey, and rookie Zachary Claman De Melo. The Honda quintet was running first through fifth at Lap 180 [of 200], with Servia at the point. The yellow flag flew for the seventh and final time on Lap 189, and on the Lap 192 restart Wilson rapidly moved around Servia to lead with just eight laps remaining.

Harvey also passed Servia for second, but both were forced to pit for a splash of fuel on Lap 197. Servia and Claman De Melo pitted one lap later, leaving Dixon to lead the Honda field home, in third, behind race winner Will Power.

The second group included Honda drivers Graham Rahal, Robert Wickens, Marco Andretti and Alexander Rossi. Starting 32nd after cutting a tire during his qualifying run last weekend, Rossi pulled off pass after pass right from the green flag, gaining seven positions in the first 15 laps and continuing to work his way up the order. Running 12th on Lap 117, Rossi gained another seven places during a pair of restarts on Lap 144 and 152, moving him to third with 40 laps remaining. Dixon’s ability to save fuel to the finish dropped Rossi to fourth at the checkers.

After starting 30th, Rahal made steady progress up the running order, leading 12 laps mid-race. As the differing strategies converged in the final 20 laps, Rahal finished 10th. Just ahead at the checkers, Robert Wickens completed an impressive Indy 500 debut, as the rookie also led two laps en route to a ninth-place result, highest of the four rookies in the field.

Video recaps from this month’s Honda racing activities at Indianapolis, including today’s Indianapolis 500, are being posted on the “Honda Racing/HPD” YouTube channel. Produced by the Carolinas Production Group, the video packages can be found in the 2015 HPD Trackside Video Playlist at: https://www.youtube.com/HondaRacingHPDTV.

IndyCar Series teams and drivers now prepare for a hectic schedule of three races over the next two weeks, starting with next weekend’s June 2-3 doubleheader weekend, with races both Saturday and Sunday on the Belle Isle street circuit in Detroit, Michigan.

Scott Dixon (#9 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) finished 3rd: “We were trying to save fuel at the end and we knew we had to take a gamble with the PNC Bank car. We just didn’t have the speed today and the restarts were tough for us. That [finish] was all due to my team, though. They made that great strategy call and all I did was get the fuel number they gave me. Huge congrats to [race winner] Will Power. I know he’s been very hungry for this and congratulations to him.”

Alexander Rossi (#27 Andretti Autosport Honda) finished 4th: “I feel like we did what we could, and we maximized what we had. The NAPA Andretti Honda team did everything right. I don’t look back on anything and wish we’d done anything different. Despite, it was a good day from a championship perspective. We didn’t have enough to win, but congrats to Will [Power].”

Robert Wickens (#6 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda) finished 9th, top rookie finisher: “It was an emotional rollercoaster today. I thought we had a great car, but we just couldn’t progress. We would make some moves forward with the strategy, and then we would get a yellow that would put us at the back again. Hats off to the Lucas Oil SPM boys – we had great pit stops all day. Finally, at the end we could let loose and pick people off, and we went from 19th to ninth in the last 10 laps. Today was a lot of fun. I’m leaving here feeling like I want more, but a top-10 finish as a rookie in the Indy 500… it’s hard to complain.”

Stefan Wilson (#25 Andretti Autosport Honda) finished 15th after leading three laps: “It was so close – it was a great strategy call by the team. The No. 25 Driven2SaveLives team did a great job all day. With that strategy call, we knew we were gambling. We knew we were rolling the dice. We were just hoping for another yellow flag at the end. I was leading, and I knew we were strong enough and wouldn’t be able to be passed but the yellow just didn’t come. While I was out there leading, I was just out there thinking if it goes yellow now my dreams are made. It didn’t happen, but we led our first laps, we learned a lot this month and it was mad fun, so I’m leaving here with a smile on my face and my head held high.”

Art St. Cyr (president, Honda Performance Development) on today’s Indianapolis 500: “The best you can ever hope for at the Indianapolis 500 is to have multiple cars in contention for victory late in the race, and we did that today. As the race developed, there were two different [pit] strategies in play, and Honda drivers featured in both. Scott [Dixon’s] bold fuel-saving tactic, came very close to paying off today. And Alexander [Rossi] pulled off some of the most amazing passes I’ve ever seen here, at one point making up seven positions on two restarts. He’s clearly proving that his victory here in 2016 was no fluke. Unfortunately, we were unable to add to our 12 Indianapolis 500 victories here today, but we’ll go on to Detroit next week looking for a repeat of last year’s doubleheader sweep.”

“Will Power showed speed all month and today he delivered a huge win for his team, Roger Penske and Chevrolet. Will and his crew never gave up all race. They kept making the right adjustments on the car at the right time, and Will simply drove a race. Will’s win is extra special because it is Chevrolet’s 10th win at this iconic race, and Roger’s 17th Indy 500 championship. We couldn’t be prouder of the one team effort with Chevrolet Propulsion, motorsports, Ilmor, Pratt & Miller and Team Penske. The Chevrolet Indy V6 delivered the right combination of power, durability and efficiency all race long.

“Ed Carpenter was also fast during the month of May, clinching the pole, leading many laps today and finishing runner-up, capping a 1-2 finish for Chevrolet.

“The speedway was packed today, the atmosphere was electric and it was a thrilling race to the end.”

WHAT A LONG JOURNEY YOU’VE HAD TO THIS PLACE TODAY
“Man, I just can’t believe it. I changed my attitude a lot after Barber. Very positive. Had a great month. I just can’t believe it. I’ve got to thank Roger Penske, Verizon, and my parents for allowing me to get to this point. I can’t describe it. I feel like collapsing. I want to cry. I couldn’t stop screaming on the radio. SO YOU WERE LEADING, WITH JUST A HANDFUL OF LAPS TO GO, AND A YELLOW FLAG COMES OUT. WHAT’S GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND?
“I’m just like, I have to get these guys. I don’t know how much fuel they’ve got. But this is the restart of my life. Matt Tifft Earns Hard-Fought Top-10 Finish in No. 2 KC Motorgroup Chevrolet Camaro at Charlotte Motor Speedway

“That was one of the toughest top-10 finishes of my career. We fought the handling all weekend long, trying everything to get the balance to where we needed it to be for Saturday’s race. Our No. 2 KC Motorgroup Chevrolet Camaro was constantly too heavy in the nose and too loose in the rear. Randall (Burnett, crew chief) had a great call to pit off-cycle to gain some stage points at the end of Stage 2. After that, the cautions fell our way a little bit and we got back on cycle with our pitting and able to get the car to closer to where we needed it to be while maintaining track position. I’m glad NASCAR was able to get the rest of the race in for the fans. We battled hard there those last few laps and were able to come home with a ninth place finish. I can’t thank my guys enough for their determination this weekend. It made the difference for us.”

-Matt Tifft

Ty Dillon Scores Fourth-Place Finish in Nexium 24HR Chevrolet at Charlotte Motor Speedway

“Our Nexium 24HR Chevrolet was incredibly fast this weekend. We unloaded with speed on Thursday, and I was able to get a lot out of this thing as we adjusted throughout practice. Our Camaro was loose during the race today, but there was a lot of speed. We just needed to have the perfect balance so that I could be aggressive with it. Nick (Harrison, crew chief) made a few air pressure changes during the race to help, but we didn’t need to make many adjustments. We had an uncontrolled tire penalty in Stage 3 and had to start in the rear, but our car was so fast that we were back in the top 10 in just a few laps. It was risky, but we decided to play with pit strategy at the end so that we would have fresher tires than the rest of the field to finish out the race. We were so fast, but came up three spots short in the end. I can’t thank these RCR guys enough for building such a fast race car. I always like getting in these cars, and I’m looking forward to being back with them in Kentucky.”

Daniel Hemric Leads Laps, Records Seventh Top-10 Finish of 2018 at Charlotte Motor Speedway

7th

17th

4th
“We missed it a little bit in qualifying and that put us back in the 17th spot to start the race and we had to fight really hard. We were able to get decent track position at the start of the race and got up into the top 10 and earned points in Stage 1. We thought we knew what the balance of the car was going to do, but it was magnified when we put on new tires. I fought being too loose the entire second stage. My crew chief Danny Stockman did a great job playing a little bit of strategy by getting tires and getting off sequence from everybody else. That gave us the track position we needed. It was cool to get out front and lead some laps in front of the hometown crowd with the South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet. The car was just too tight on that final run. We did a lot of things right today. The finish just doesn’t show it. It’s easy to look at this as a disappointing seventh-place finish, but we did a lot of things right and that is what we will lean on going to Pocono next week.”

DO YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT MINDSET GOING INTO THIS RACE? YOU HAVE MORE EXPERIENCE NOW. ARE YOU MORE RELAXED? DO YOU HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PLAN?
“I think you learn to understand that it’s a long race. I was a bit spoiled I think, my first year, I had a really good car and I was able to just drive through the field whenever I wanted. My second year, I learned that you don’t always have a good car. And it was very frustrating. And basically, the first 150 laps, I was just so aggravated inside the car because I felt like there was nothing I could do to show what I could do on track. But then, you make a few good pit stops. You maybe get in front on strategy, and all of a sudden you find yourself in the top 10. And you’re like okay, well I don’t have a great car but I’m in the top 10 and I have a good shot. And then the whole thing can turn around just like that, right? And then you come in the pits and something happens and you get a drive through and you’re back in the back again.
