Pippa Mann, No. 39 Driven2SaveLives Clauson-Marshall Racing Chevrolet, met with members of the media at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to discuss the May 26 race and other topics. Selected quotes:
WHAT HAS BEEN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR?
“The car was sitting in the garage with a Chevy Bowtie engine in the back and was ready to roll out. If we would have been allowed, as we normally are, to roll out and do the install check at 11 a.m. before the veterans’ refresher at 1, we were ready to do that. Last year, trying to turn the car around after the GP of Indy we barely made it out there in time before the end of the veteran refresher session full stop. Last year our car was very good in traffic, but unfortunately when we tried to trim it out, for several reasons why, it didn’t pan out. This year, we were cognizant of the fact that we don’t care what the overall time sheet says every day. We have no interest in a big tow. We’re going to be real smart and go about our business and I think when you pull up the no-tow timesheets of every day, that’s exactly what we did.”

WHO HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE?
“Certainly my biggest influence in terms of coming the U.S. and wanting to Indy car race was Sarah Fisher. She was the first female racer who I had ever heard of getting in a big, fast open-wheel car and running up front. Then when I started to learn more about IndyCar, obviously Danica Patrick was the person at the time but I started to learn more about Janet Guthrie and Lynn St. James and how those women paved the way for someone like me to try to follow in their footsteps.”

IF YOU GAVE ADVICE TO A YOUNG WOMAN SEEKING TO BE IN MOTORSPORT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
“I think as a woman coming into this business you have to be incredibly determined, possibly even more so than your male counterparts. If you do a good job and you’re with the right people, those people won’t care what your gender is. The race car doesn’t know what your gender is, but there is still a very small and very loud portion of the population of the fan base that sort of has a problem with us being here. They make themselves heard. I think having the resilience and the ability to overcome that, ignore that, having the resilience of almost having to carry the weight of all the other female drivers on your shoulders at times, because whereas James Hinchcliffe is allowed to go out and represent James, it seems whenever one of us takes to the racetrack we’re sort of forced to go out and represent all of us. So, you have to have pretty broad shoulders to carry that weight. Last year, not qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 I thought that was it. One-off driver, didn’t make the race, that’s when the girl factor plays into it. Because you have all these people say that you’re never going to be able to do it. To have that prophesy come true for them, I think it’s harder to overcome as a female because your effectively fulfilled that prophesy. You carry that extra weight with you. Be determined, broad shoulders, be prepared to work extra hard.”

“We only tested on the Monday before St. Petersburg, so we can’t say we arrived as we wanted to because everything ended up getting a bit delayed. We were really still finishing the car throughout the weekend. We were nowhere prepared as we wanted to be, but we didn’t want to put off getting in our first race as they coincide with the other programs that are running.”

HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN AT HOME?
“It’s been good. It’s a huge race, but when you are here, you realize how huge it is. You know it’s one of the biggest races, if not the biggest race, but you don’t realize it until you’re here what the atmosphere is like. You can watch it on television, but it’s not the same as it is being here. It’s been an eye-opening experience, but in a positive way. Everyone is busy for two weeks, whether you’re testing, qualifying, or doing media. It’s great. All of this allows us to participate in the race. It’s a great thing that IndyCar is so proactive in pushing the social media, the drivers and teams to get forward and get on the television. It’s amazing for everyone involved.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–INDYCAR–Indy 500–Media Day–Ben Hanley

CARLIN CHEVROLET DRIVER CHARLIE KIMBALL PARTICIPATED IN INDY 500 MEDIA DAY. SELECTED QUOTES FROM EACH DRIVER:

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED IN THE YEARS YOU’VE BEEN COMPETING IN THE 500?
“Back then, I don’t think I understood the magnitude of this place. I know how big it was racing the Freedom 100 in the Indy Lights championship at that time and seeing how big Carb Day was and then coming on race and realizing how many people came. But my rookie year, all the tradition, all the pomp, all the circumstance, the pieces that go into the whole month, the stress of qualifying, the chaos of Carb Day, the traditions of the parade on Saturday and then race day itself – starting early with the cannon going off. Now it just means more than ever. I think it was Tony Kanaan in his victory celebration banquet speech a few years ago, he said a lot of times you do something, and you check that box. He at the Indy 500 you do it and it just gets further and further into your soul and you just want to do it again and again and again. It’s so true. Each and every time I come to this place it means more than the year before.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–INDYCAR–Indy 500 Media Day–Charlie Kimball

Menard Qualifies 17th At Charlotte

May 24, 2019

Paul Menard and the No. 21 Menards/Knauf Insulation Mustang are set to start Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway from the 17th starting position.

Menard earned that spot Thursday evening with a lap at 181.830 miles per hour in a one-driver-at-a-time qualifying session.

That significantly bettered his best lap of 180.246 mph in pre-qualifying practice.
Menard said in a post-qualifying media session that he’d already begun focusing on the Coca-Cola 600.

“The race on Sunday is going be a lot different than qualifying on Thursday night,” he said, adding that his qualifying speed will give him a decent pit selection for Sunday. Continue reading Menard Qualifies 17th At Charlotte

ED CARPENTER RACING CHEVROLET DRIVERS PARTICIPATED IN INDY 500 MEDIA DAY. SELECTED QUOTES FROM EACH DRIVER:

ED CARPENTER, No.20 Preferred Freezer Services

Q. How much does strategy change, if at all, with having all your cars up front?
ED CARPENTER: I don’t know that it does. There’s so many factors. Certainly, if we can all stay there, it can be helpful to have teammates around to insulate each other a little bit. But it’s a long 500 miles. I doubt we’ll be lined up one, two, three all day long. It would be amazing if that is the case, and I won’t complain one bit, but we try to be prepared for everything.

Q. You’re going to love this. Gotten varying responses on the question about desire. Some have said that they believe that all of you who race in this race have the same innate desire. Others insist, no, no, some guys want it more than others ‑‑ Graham, Helio, Simon, they all insisted that some guys want it more than others. I don’t know, if desire mattered, you probably would have won four already by now, but how much do you think desire matters?
ED CARPENTER: I mean, I think it’s an important piece, like if you don’t truly want to be out there and truly want to win the race, I don’t think you’re going to be motivated to put in the work and put out the risk and everything that it takes to be successful. I guess for me, it’s not for me to say what another person’s desire is. We’ve all worked hard to get here. That’s the great thing about opinions, we all have them, just like ‑‑ Continue reading Chevy Racing–INDYCAR–Indianapolis Media Day–Ed Carpenter Racing

WILLIAM BYRON PUTS CAMARO ZL1 ON THE POLE AT CHARLOTTE

CONCORD, NC (May 23, 2019) – Behind the wheel of his No. 24 Liberty Patriot Camaro ZL1 at 21 years of age, William Byron became the youngest driver ever to capture the pole for the 60TH Annual Coca-Cola 600 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Charlotte native turned a lap of 182.424 mph/29.440 seconds to lead the field to the green on Sunday in NASCAR’s longest race.

This marked the second pole in 49 MENCS races for Byron, who also sat on the pole for the Daytona 500. It was the sixth pole for Chevrolet in 2019.

Austin Dillon was fourth quick in his No. 3 Coca-Cola Zero Sugar Camaro ZL1 was fourth quick to give Team Chevy two of the top four qualifiers. Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Coca-Cola 600– WILLIAM BYRON PUTS CAMARO ZL1 ON THE POLE AT CHARLOTTE

HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE CHAOS THIS NEW PACKAGE BRINGS WHEN EVERYBODY IS SO CLOSE TOGETHER AND PEOPLE ARE MAKING BOLD MOVES AND YOU’RE SIDE-DRAFTING AND GETTING INTO EACH OTHER. HOW DO YOU MANAGE RISK VS. REWARD?
“It’s kind of trial and error. You can find out things and moves you can make and feel confident in it and make it work. It’s all pretty relative. We all know what we’re all fighting and how our cars shift and balance-wise versus how you cover up a guys nose or how close you get to the back bumper in certain situations. You know pretty quickly throughout a race whose car is better at certain places and what your car is capable of. It’s managing those variables in whatever situation you find yourself in and having this much knowledge from lap one until the checkered flag flies. Being able to relay the information is a big thing.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Charlotte–Coca-Cola 600–Daniel Hemric

HOW DISAPPOINTED ARE YOU BEING BETWEEN WIN NUMBER ONE AND EVENTUALLY GETTING WIN NUMBER TWO?
“It’s hard. You never think it’s going to be easy going to the next level, but you always want it to be. You want to be able to go out and have success. It’s been awhile since then to get back into victory lane. We are steadily closer. I think this year has gotten us closer to another win. Everyone has been working really hard, with Kroger, Bush’s Baked Beans, Clorox, Scott Products. Everyone is in this thing together to get another win and get ourselves into the Chase. Steady progress is sort of the name of the game. We made some big improvements in the off season. We are ahead of where we were at the end of last season and that’s awesome to see.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Coca-Cola 600 Chris Buescher

YOU’VE HAD GREAT SPEED FOR MUCH OF THE SEASON, BUT NOW WITH THIS ALL-STAR WIN, DOES IT FEEL LIKE THE MONKEY IS OFF YOUR BACK TO BUILD SOME MOMENTUM?
“I hope so. I felt like we’ve had decent speed. I was surprised to get a win like that last weekend. I didn’t feel like we had the ‘winning speed’, but we were able to execute and get good restarts during the All-Star Race. If we can continue to do that and continue to improve our cars even more, then I feel like we can contend for wins. It’s still going to take a lot of hard work, but I was happy to win that last weekend. Win it for our sponsors and Chevy. Our Hendrick engines have been running really well. We just have to keep it going.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Charlotte–Coca-Cola 600–Kyle Larson

YOU HAVE ONE TRACK AT CHARLOTTE UNDER YOUR BELT, THE ROVAL, WHAT’S IT LIKE COMING HOME TO A LOT OF FRIENDS AND FAMILY?
“Yeah, it feels great. This is the most important race for me of the year. These two weeks are good. They didn’t go so great last year, but they’re going better so far. The All-Star race went really well for us for the most part. And practice today has gone well. So, I’m excited for it. Our car has good speed so far this weekend, which is promising. And, it’s great to be home and be able to sleep in your own bed and wake up and go to the race track. It feels like the old days.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Coca Cola 600

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 2 SH:ELL V POWER CHEVROLET:

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I don’t know, good question. I think it’s hard to be an underdog when you’re a Penske driver. I really do, just because we’ve all got great equipment. We’ve all seen each other’s stuff. We’ve all been able to follow each other quite closely. Yeah, I think we’re all ‑‑ we’ve all got a great shot. For sure Helio has got great credentials. Everyone knows that. Will is now on the credential list with his victory last year, but Simon and me, I think we’re right there with them, and it’s hard to beat these guys. You’d like to think it’s hard for them to beat me, but we thrive off that, as a team environment we thrive off trying to beat each other in a positive way, and I think it helps push us to be better than the rest. So I think we’ve got a good shot. Continue reading Chevy Racing–INDYCAR–Indy 500 Media Day
