No Rest for the Wicked, Pittman Wins Two Features This Week

The busiest month of the season for the Outlaws rolls on but it hasn’t slowed Daryn Pittman and the No. 9 Great Clips/Sage Fruit/ASE team down. They captured their tenth and eleventh wins of the season this past week (and last night) and remain in a close battle in the point standings. This is the first time in Pittman’s career he’s won double-digit features in a season on the Outlaw tour.

Cody Darrah and the No. 4 Ollie’s/Sage Fruit/ASE team moved up a spot in the points after a pair of top-5 finishes this past week, While Brad Sweet and the No. 49 SureTest/Sage Fruit/ASE team continue their top-5 push.

World of Outlaws–Daryn Pittman Charges to 11th Win of the Season at Fulton Speedway

Daryn Pittman Charges to 11th Win of the Season at Fulton Speedway
Jessica Zemken scores best ever World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series finish

FULTON, N.Y. – July 23, 2014 – Daryn Pittman charged to his 11th win of the season Wednesday night at Fulton Speedway, as Sprakers, N.Y.-native Jessica Zemken scored her best ever World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series finish.

Pittman, who sits just 55 points out of the championship lead, said the win was the most uncomfortable he has had this season.

“I just knew we were going to get smoked,” Pittman said in victory lane. “I honestly thought we were going to go from the lead to fourth or fifth in a lap. I just didn’t know what to do. I was lost as a driver. The pace of the race just changed dramatically there.”

“I was good on top in one and two and when I could run the top in one and two that really helped me hit the top in three and four.”

Pittman said as he approached lapped traffic in his Great Clips #9, he noticed the cars were getting away from him.

“When I started running the bottom all the way around, I started making really bad laps in three and four on the bottom,” he said. “I just kept waiting for somebody to show me their nose… It’s an uncomfortable feeling as a driver when you’re doing the wrong thing on the racetrack and you just don’t know what to do. I was looking for the checkered about five laps before that and luckily it was just enough.”

Pittman credited his crew chief Kale Kahne for making substantial changes after his dash win to give him the car he needed at the end of the feature.

Zemken said her Corr/Pak Merchandising team’s third place finish means a lot – especially against the competition.

“It’s like a win for us,” she said. “To come here with the budget we have and the equipment that we have and be able to be here and be competitive with these guys – it’s just awesome.”

Zemken, who won her heat race earlier in the night and started the A main in sixth, said her experience at the track helped her understand how the surface would change throughout the night. She said she knew the bottom would be good later after the middle and top went away.

After losing her brakes with four to go, Zemken said she figured her night would be over.

“As soon as the brakes went to floor, I said this is what always happens,” she said. “We have a good car, something bad’s going to happen… They held up just enough to slow me down to be able to catch the bottom. And when I came up on Schatz I got underneath him a couple of times and I didn’t even realize Saldana was a lapped car. I’ve got to say, that’s the first time that I’ve been able to come around and lap Joey Saldana. I stuck behind him a little bit. I’ll take third.”

After winning the dash, Pittman started on the front row with David Gravel. As Pittman jumped out to an early lead, Gravel had his hands full with Cody Darrah. The two battled through the opening laps but Donny Schatz looked to take advantage in his STP/Armor All car. He got around Darrah by lap 10, as Gravel maintained the second position.

Farther back, Zemken was making her push forward, getting around Kraig Kinser in the fifth position and then taking the fourth spot from Darrah.

With less than 10 to go, Schatz got around Gravel for the second spot and set his sights on Pittman. As the A main entered its final laps and Pittman battled through lapped traffic, Schatz took one last look at Pittman.

Pittman took the checkered flag in first with Schatz second, Zemken in third, and after a drag race down the front stretch, Gravel in fourth and Darrah in fifth.

Schatz said he worked all night trying to find the right line on the track. He said he wished his team had been able to make a few more changes.

“I tried – that’s all you can do,” Schatz said. “The car was OK… We’ll try harder next week.”

The race for the championship remains tight between Pittman and Schatz. 55 points separate the two just past the halfway point of the season.

Summit Racing–Anderson Returns to Capitalize on Personal History in Sonoma

MOORESVILLE, N.C., July 22, 2014 – Summit Racing Pro Stock driver Greg Anderson has a reason to be confident heading into this weekend’s 27th annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals. Just a handful of days ago in Denver, the driver of the white Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro powered to his best qualifying performance of the season, and on raceday he was up to the task as he once again proved his driving capabilities and left his competitors at the starting line. Add to his recent success behind the wheel the fact that he is the winningest Pro Stock driver at Sonoma Raceway and it seems apparent that all of the key ingredients are present.

Follow a Dream–New England Dragway

PERMATEX/FOLLOW A DREAM TEAM REACHES THE SEMI’S AT NEW ENGLAND DRAGWAY

Marstons Mills, MA -July 23, 2014-With a semifinal appearance at the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at the team’s home track, New England Dragway, Jay Blake’s Permatex/Follow A Dream team moved into a tie for second place in the East Region Top Alcohol Funny Car standings. Driver Todd Veney got around No. 1 qualifier Fred Tigges in the first round before falling to eventual runner-up Matt Gill in the semifinals in another matchup of Massachusetts-based teams.
Veney qualified 8th in the field with a backpedaling 6.02 at 250 mph and won the first round when Tigges invalidated a track-record 5.55 with a red-light start. In the semi’s, he backpedaled when the car headed toward the wall and eventually shut off to a 7.30.
“There’s not much you can do when the front end’s in the air like that,” Veney said. “We probably would have won if the car was going straight because it left hard with the wheels up, but it’s a pretty helpless feeling when you can’t steer.”
“The car ran great in testing, but it was a different track when qualifying began,” said Blake. Veney coasted to a 5.94 at 173 mph on the first test run, a planned half-track shutoff that would have been a 5.62 or 5.63. The second run was a 5.60-flat at more than 258 mph, close to both ends of the New England Dragway track record.
The Follow A Dream team’s next race is the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series East Regional Aug. 1-2 at Atco Dragway, where the team won in 2007 and 2010.

John Force Racing Looks Toward Sonoma

HIGHT RETURNS TO EVENT WHERE HIS DREAM CAREER BEGAN

SONOMA, CA (July 22, 2014) — Before Robert Hight was a five-time winner in 2014 and the 2009 Funny Car champion on the NHRA Mello Yello NHRA Drag Racing Series tour, before he was the go-to clutch man for 16-time Funny Car champion John Force he was simply a fan watching the Sonoma NHRA Nationals from the ropes like tens of thousands of fans will do this weekend. Hight has witnessed every running of the 27th annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals from just about every perspective.

“This is my favorite time of the year. I am a West Coast guy. Sonoma is where I first saw fuel cars run at a national event. I have been to every single NHRA national event they have had either as a fan, a crew guy or a driver. I’ve won here so that makes it special. I’d like to win that race again and get second third of the Western Swing,” said an excited Hight moments after winning the Mile-High Nationals.

Ross Hoek Motorsports–Another Podium for Ross Hoek @ TORC Bark River Part 2

Holland, Mich. (July 22, 2014) – The second visit to Bark River International Off-Road Raceway saw Ross Hoek battle his way to another podium finish with the #10 Nitto Tire/TR Beadlock/Shop-Vac PRO-4×4. Despite some adversity throughout the weekend, the Ross Hoek Motorsports team stayed focused and kept their driver on the track and running strong during both rounds of racing.

The 1.4 mile long natural terrain track had one change since their first visit in June as a tabletop jump replaced a double jump along the County Road straightaway. During the Friday evening practice session, Hoek adapted to the track change well and at the same time found a few issues with truck, most notably inconsistent brake pedal pressure.

Dyson Racing–McMurry’s Summer School Class in Close Combat

It may be school vacation time for most of Matt McMurry’s high-school classmates back in Phoenix, but for the 16-year-old Dyson Racing Junior Development Program driver summer school continues, most recently this past weekend with the running of the European Le Mans Series 4 Hours of Red Bull Ring. McMurry, who last month became the youngest driver ever to start the 24 Hours of Le Mans, racked up more valuable seat time as he and his teammates, Tom Kimber-Smith and Mark Patterson took their Greaves Motorsports Caterham Zytek Z11SN – Nissan LMP2 entry to a sixth-place overall finish.
“This was a really hard-fought race for us and for just all the teams,” McMurry said, following a final-hour battle to the checker between two-time Le Mans winner Kimber-Smith and ex-F1 driver Christian Klien in the Newblood by Morand Racing Morgan Judd, with Kimber-Smith coming up less than two seconds shy.
