TONY STEWART, NO. 14 MOBIL 1 ADVANCED FUEL ECONOMY CHEVROLET SS, spoke with the FOX broadcast team prior to the start of today’s race at Richmond International Raceway. Transcript:
FOX: FOX NASCAR live from Richmond International Raceway. We thank the three-time champ Tony Stewart for joining us down on the track. it’s great to have you back. what do you expect from yourself in today’s race?

Tony Stewart: Honestly, I just expect to go do what I have always done for the last 36 years since I started racing. just get in and do the best I can. Mike and all these guys on the Mobile 1 Chevy team, they have done an awesome job. They had long hours starting Wednesday afternoon switching this thing over from Brian Vickers being in the car to getting my seat and everything set up for me. so they had a late, late night Wednesday night. I appreciate that. This is exactly what — if I could script this, this is what I want. it’s a day race, my favorite track, no clouds in the sky. It’s going to get warm. that’s every piece of every variable I could ask for. Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Richmond–Pre-Race

SIX QUESTIONS WITH JTG DAUGHERTY’S COMPETITION DIRECTOR ERNIE COPE:
Veteran crew chief helps team make great strides in new role as Competition Director

TALK ABOUT YOUR NEW ROLE AT JTG DAUGHERTY RACING AND HOW THE TRANSITION HAS BEEN FROM CLIMBING OFF THE PIT BOX AS CREW CHIEF NOW TO COMPETITION DIRECTOR:
“I’m actually enjoying it. It’s definitely a different role, but I enjoy the car build side and dealing with the people. Not calling the race seems a little strange, but Randall (Burnett, crew chief) is doing a great job. It’s just fun to watch and watch him come along. He is doing a great job. If he was doing a really bad job it would be hard. It would be something that you would want to question everything he does, but I just support him. I support the whole group and just try to make sure everybody has what they need. We are moving forward, everybody is working well together and that is what I feel my role is. To make sure everybody has what they need and everybody is working together and going for the same goal. Everyone being a team and being with each other and nobody being against each other.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Richmond–Ernie Cope

Captures Ted Johnson Memorial trophy at Devil’s Bowl Speedway

MESQUITE, Texas – April 23, 2016 – An emotional Shane Stewart climbed from his car and wiped away tears of joy after he fought his way to the front of the field and claimed Saturday night’s Texas Outlaw Nationals $20,000 to-win finale at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, his second World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season.

Stewart is just the third driver to chisel his name into the Ted Johnson Memorial trophy, after Daryn Pittman claimed the inaugural event in 2014 and Donny Schatz won in 2015.

“I’m a little choked up, this is a big win for me,” Stewart said. “A lot of people have helped me get to this point. I drove for a lot of good car owners, like my mom and dad who are here. Continue reading Shane Stewart Captures Ted Johnson Memorial trophy at Devil’s Bowl Speedway

Allen Johnson Bounces Back in Saturday Qualifying for Favorable Raceday Momentum

CONCORD, N.C. (April 19, 2016) – Allen Johnson, driver of the Marathon Petroleum Corporation/J&J Racing Pro Stock Dodge Dart GT, will enter raceday in the No. 9 spot at the Sixth annual NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods.

With questionable weather all Friday, Johnson wasn’t positive any runs would be made that day. During the first qualifying run, Johnson experienced massive tire shake at the hit of the throttle and aborted the run; He clocked in with a 12.924-second pass at 88.85 mph. Like Johnson predicted, Mother Nature showed up and cancelled the second session of qualifying that evening.

For Saturday’s first session, Johnson came out swinging and bounced back from Friday’s tire shake with a 6.638, 208.65. With a positive baseline, the Marathon team was able to tune it to a very consistent 6.634, 208.14 in the final round of qualifying.

Johnson will be No. 9 going into raceday and Shane Tucker, Greg Anderson and Chris McGaha will join him in his first round quad.

“I feel good about how the car is running,” said Johnson. “We made a good run in Q3 [final qualifying]. The coolest thing is when we missed the first round because of shaking, the team really bounced back together. We really bounced back and got better today. We’ll keep digging tomorrow and hopefully we can get this Dodge Dart to the winner circle.”

STRONG QUALIFYING EFFORT HAS JFR SET FOR FOUR-WIDE SUCCESS

CONCORD, NC – Heading into the elimination rounds of the 7th annual NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods John Force Racing could not have asked for a better qualifying result. Perseverance is key for reigning Pro Stock champion Erica Enders

Perseverance is key for reigning Pro Stock champion Erica Enders
CHARLOTTE (April 23) — After two years of running roughshod over the competition in winning back-to-back Pro Stock world championships, Erica Enders has come back to the pack this year in her Elite Motorsports/Mopar Dodge Dart. Her seasoned race crew and engine builders knew it wasn’t going to be easy switching from another brand to Mopar and the Hemi powerplant, and the growing pains they’ve experienced in the first four and a half races would cripple most teams, but not Enders’ group.

“We just need to keep doing what we’ve been doing for the last few years,” Enders said at the conclusion of qualifying for this weekend’s seventh annual NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods. “This is a pit full of multi-time champions and I wouldn’t change a thing about this team. They have proven time and again to be the best in the sport. It’s just not an easy thing to jump from one manufacturer to another. There’s going to be hiccups and we knew that coming into the season. Jeg Coughlin Jr. asking for more from his Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart

Jeg Coughlin Jr. asking for more from
his Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart
CHARLOTTE (April 23) — Jeg Coughlin Jr.’s bid for his first NHRA Four-Wide Nationals trophy will begin from the bottom half of the qualifying ladder after the five-time Pro Stock world champion posted a 12th-best 6.660 at 207.62 mph in his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart.

The result was a bit of a disappointment for the 58-time national event winner, who was hoping for a loftier starting slot after seeing the progress the team made between races.

“Coming into the event we certainly felt like we were making more in the horsepower department, and Erica’s car was tested and ran well last week in Tulsa (Okla.), but something still appears to be holding us back,” said Coughlin, who won the fall race here in 2013. “We’re not quite scratching our heads but we’re close to that. We know we’re capable of running within a few hundredths of the front teams, which would be a low 6.60 here, but we weren’t able to do that this weekend.

“Typically, when you’re as far off as we are here it’s something pretty obvious, but that’s not the case. The boys are already hard at it trying to find a way. It’ll be a busy 18 hours until we run the first round of eliminations. Hopefully, we get some things figured out.”

As the No. 12 qualifier, Coughlin will be the third of his foursome of drivers to select which lane he will race down. His opponents will be No. 4 qualifier Bo Butner (6.584), No. 5 qualifier Shane Gray (6.602), and No. 13 qualifier Deric Kramer (6.663). Under the rules of the Four-Wide Nationals, the two quickest cars in each foursome advance to the next round.

“I have complete faith in the team,” Coughlin said. “They won the last two championships over here, so it’s just a case of putting our heads together and see if we can’t work some sort of miracle tomorrow at this famous Four-Wide race.

“The car’s driving pretty well, but we’re still in the start-up phase in some regards as far as running with Mopar and the Hemis. We’ll continue to narrow it down and find something we can race with.”

Pro Stock eliminations begin around 1 p.m., Sunday. FOX Sports 1 will air qualifying action from 10 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, and elimination racing from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., Sunday. All times are listed in Eastern time zone.

Chevrolet IndyCar Drivers Capture Top-Five Starting Spots and Eight of Top-10

BIRMINGHAM (April 23, 2016) – Simon Pagenaud, the most recent Verizon IndyCar Series race winner-last Sunday on the Streets of Long Beach-won the Verizon P1 Award for the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park. With a lap of 1 minute, 6.7262 seconds/124.089 mph, Pagenaud, piloting the No. 22 PPG Automotive Finishes Team Penske Chevrolet, captured his first pole of the 2016 season, and the third of his career.

Will Power qualified the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet second. Rahal Leads Honda Qualifiers at Barber Motorsports Park

Rahal Leads Honda Qualifiers at Barber Motorsports Park
• Best qualifying effort of 2015 for Rahal
• Hinchcliffe, Filippi also advance through two qualifying rounds
• Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama runs Sunday

In his first Firestone Fast Six appearance of 2016, Graham Rahal led the Honda contingent Saturday at Barber Motorsports Park and will start sixth in Sunday’s Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. In addition to being his best qualifying result of the season, today’s performance is also Rahal’s strongest qualifying effort in seven starts at the scenic road course just outside of Birmingham, Alabama. In his best previous race at Barber, in 2015, Rahal started eighth and went on to finish second.

James Hinchcliffe continued to show good form on the road and street circuits of the Verizon IndyCar Series, qualifying eighth today for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, with Luca Filippi also making it to the second round of “knockout” Indy car qualifying to start 12th for Dale Coyne Racing.

Sunday’s 90-lap Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama starts at 3 p.m. EDT, with live network television coverage on the NBC Sports Network.

Graham Rahal (#15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda): “It will make life a little easier, being this far forward [for the race start]. It’s always an interesting race around this place but we’ll just have to see how it plays out tomorrow. For us to get into the Fast Six, I did was about as good of a lap as I think I have ever put together here. From comments I’ve heard, others are struggling with the rear tires going off a lot in the long run and I don’t really have that problem. We’re going to keep our heads down, keep focused and just out race them a little bit. And if we can keep the rear tires under us, and save some fuel hopefully to make the end of the race easier so we can attack hard, I think it will put us in a good spot.”

Concord, North Carolina (April 22, 2016) – For a seventh season, the National Hot Rod Association Four-Wide Nationals returns to the specially built zMAX Dragway near Charlotte, N.C. for a unique event that doubles up on the challenge for competitors and the excitement for fans with a four lane drag racing format rather than the customary two.

It was a promising start to the weekend for at least one HEMI-powered entry as the Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car of Don Schumacher Racing’s Matt Hagan took the top spot in a qualifying on Friday with a both the elapsed time and speed track records before a persistent drizzle limited activity to just the one session. Late Race Caution Puts Austin Dillon and the Ruud Team in Contention at Richmond International Raceway

“In the heat race we struggled with a really tight-handling Ruud Chevrolet but we were able to make it better on the long run before the main event started. We definitely had a decent car on the long run. We just couldn’t take off to start a run. At the end of the long run we were probably one of the fastest cars. On that last restart if we had a car that could have turned a bit better we probably could have moved somebody or tried to, at least. I just could not get to them in the first corner. It was a good day for RCR in general and I’m very proud of my brother, Ty, for his Dash4Cash win. That’s what he needed right there.”

– Austin Dillon

Ty Dillon wins #Dash4Cash, Finishes Runner-Up at Richmond International Raceway

“Today was an all around excellent day for our No. 3 WESCO team. With Nick Harrison out this weekend, our race engineer, Danny Efland, really stepped up and delivered today. This team has a whole lot of fight and was there with me at the end to give me a great race car. I really wanted to win this race today, and thought we had a chance at the end. It’s cool to win this Dash4Cash and I can’t thank XFINITY enough for allowing us to race this format. It was exciting to win the heat race and be one step closer to locking ourselves in the Chase. We’re looking forward to getting Nick back next week and hopefully scoring a win. Today was fun; we need more days like today.”

– Ty Dillon

Brandon Jones and the No. 33 Chevrolet Military Discount Camaro Team Continue Strong Season with a Top-15 Finish at Richmond International Raceway

“This weekend was tricky from the beginning with practice and qualifying cancelled because of rain on Friday. We didn’t get a chance to dial in the No. 33 Chevy to where we needed it and that showed during today’s race. We fought an overall lack of grip that had me slipping and sliding around the track. Mike (Hillman, crew chief) made great calls and we were able to finish the day with a decent finish.”

– Brandon Jones

Brendan Gaughan and the South Point Team Power to Seventh Place Finish at Richmond International Raceway

“Richmond was a fun surface to race on today. We could move around a lot with multiple grooves. The tires finally wore out, which was nice. Those late cautions really worked in our favor. In the end, Shane Wilson and my team got me a top-10 finish at Richmond, which has always been my worst race track statistically. They deserve a medal for that! My guys did an awesome job.”

SIMON PAGENAUD, NO. 22 PPG AUTOMOTIVE REFINISH TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, VERIZON P1 POLE WINNER: WHAT DOES IT DO CONFIDENCE-WISE TO KNOCK SOMEONE LIKE WILL POWER OFF THE POLE WITH ONE LAP TO DO IT? “It was awesome. The car is just incredible – the PPG car – especially on the red Firestone tires. I really had a good time and was having fun driving it. We put the least amount to fuel in it and tried to save the tires by doing one lap each segment. The car was so good that we went through every segment. On the last lap, I just dug deep. It was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had driving. That lap was really good.”

Sato Shines for Honda at Long Beach
• Late-race charge nets fifth for Sato, Honda and A.J. Foyt Racing
• Hinchcliffe rebounds from early-season disappointment to run eighth
• Caution-free race leads to record event

A late-race charge from Takuma Sato netted Honda and the A.J. Foyt Racing veteran fifth place Sunday at the Grand Prix of Long Beach, as a caution-free race around the Southern California street circuit resulted in a record race pace and negatively affected the race strategies of several Honda teams.

The race would run caution-free for the first time since 1989 and only the fourth time in Long Beach history, resulting in a record race pace of just over 100 mph. It also was the first caution-free Indy car race anywhere since Mid-Ohio in 2013. Continue reading Sato Shines for Honda at Long Beach
