WHAT TO WATCH FOR: World of Outlaws Late Models Gear Up for Southeast Tripleheader

The Series visits Smoky Mountain Speedway March 16, before visiting Boyd’s Speedway March 17-18

MARYVILLE, TN – March 13, 2023 – Three nights of high-octane action in the Southeast await the World of Outlaws CASE Construction Equipment Late Model Series as they prepare for St. Patrick’s Day weekend in Tennessee and Georgia.

The epic tripleheader kicks off in the Volunteer State for the 10th annual Tennessee Tipoff at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN, on Thursday, March 16.

Drivers will battle in a 40-lap, $10,000-to-win Feature—the first on Smoky Mountain’s new 3/8-mile configuration.

Then, the Series moves south to the Tennessee-Georgia border for Shamrock 100 weekend at Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, GA, on March 17-18.

Another $10,000 is on the line on Friday, March 17, in a 40-lap Feature. However, the stakes are raised on Saturday, March 18, as drivers wage war for $20,000 in the 60-lap weekend finale.

Any driver who sweeps the weekend could take home a total winner’s share of $40,000.

If you can’t make it to the track, watch all the action live on DIRTVision – either online on with the DIRTVision App.

Here are the top storylines to keep an eye on entering the weekend:

Smokey’s Consistency: Heading into this weekend’s tripleheader, Chris Madden finds himself at the top of the World of Outlaws CASE Late Models standings.

In four races, the Gray Court, SC driver has two top fives and three top 10s, giving him a 14-point cushion over second-place Brian Shirley.

For a complete look at the World of Outlaws CASE Late Models points standings, CLICK HERE.

“Smokey” hopes to keep that consistency going as the Series travels to two tracks where he’s found past success.

Madden hasn’t lost a national tour race at Smoky Mountain since 2020 and won the last March Series event at the Maryville, TN oval.

He also scored two top five finishes at Boyd’s when the World of Outlaws raced there last September.

A win this weekend would be his 33rd World of Outlaws win triumph.

Return to Glory: If there was ever a time for Jimmy Owens to get the monkey off his back in the 2023 season, it’s at two tracks the Series races at this weekend.

The Newport, TN driver won two of the three Features that ran in 2022 between Smoky Mountain and Boyd’s.

Owens led every lap in both the Smoky Mountain Showdown and the opening night of the Stateline Showdown last September.

He’s one of three drivers to win multiple World of Outlaws races at Smoky Mountain, joining Madden and 2004 Series champion Scott Bloomquist.

If the “O-Show” can right the ship this weekend, it’ll be his 22nd career Series win.

The Reaper Calls: The last time the Series raced at Boyd’s, Ryan Gustin scored the win with an epic last-lap pass on Dale McDowell for his second World of Outlaws victory.

Both Smoky Mountain and Boyd’s are tracks that “The Reaper” thrived at in 2022, scoring a top five finish at each of them.

Gustin’s best results were on 3/8-mile tracks all last season, scoring two wins, four podium finishes, seven top fives, and 12 top 10s.

Another win this weekend would be his third World of Outlaws victory.

Southeast Success: Owens and Gustin aren’t the only drivers who found success when the Series battled at Smoky and Boyd’s in 2022.

Max Blair and defending World of Outlaws Late Models champion Dennis Erb Jr. scored a top five on both tracks last season.

They also both found success on 3/8-mile tracks throughout the year.

Both of Blair’s victories were at tracks that size last season, and while Erb didn’t find victory lane on 3/8-mile surfaces, he did score 11 top fives on his way to the Series championship.

Playing Spoiler: While the World of Outlaws Late Models are bringing their epic roster to Smoky Mountain and Boyd’s, a few outsiders hope to play spoiler.

Mike Marlar, the 2018 Series champion, is a past Tennessee Tipoff winner—grabbing the checkered flag in 2020.

The “Winfield Warrior,” who won the Tennessee Tipoff in 2020, scored five World of Outlaws wins in 17 starts last season—four of them coming at 3/8-mile tracks.

Another name to watch is Devin Moran, who won back-to-back races at Volusia Speedway Park to kick off the 2023 World of Outlaws season.

The Dresden, OH driver will be at Smoky Mountain hoping to score a win at the track owned by his car owner Roger Sellers.

While those two are big names looking for victory, one driver who came up short last season at Boyd’s is looking for redemption.

Dale McDowell narrowly missed out on a $20,000 victory in last year’s Stateline Showdown.

He also scored a Series win at Smoky Mountain in 2018.

This weekend, a win at either track would be the “Mac Daddy’s” 15th career Series victory and a triumph within two hours of his hometown of Chickamauga, GA.

Dominic Scelzi Posts Pair of Second-Place Finishes at Central Arizona Raceway

Inside Line Promotions – CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (March 13, 2023) – Dominic Scelzi captured back-to-back runner-up results last weekend during his season-opening event.

Scelzi ventured to Central Arizona Raceway for the first time in his career during an ASCS Southwest Region doubleheader, which he began on Friday with a heat race victory. That earned enough points to make the feature redraw and Scelzi drew the No. 4 to line up on the outside of the second row in the A Main.

“If you go off the times we were the fastest car when we hit the track all weekend,” he said. “We unloaded having never been there before and we were fast in hot laps. We won the heat race. Then in the feature we went green and a guy a few rows back jumped the start. He bullied his way in and we fell back to seventh. We got back to fourth in one lap. I got to third maybe two laps later. A few laps after we got by (Logan) Forler for second and we were all over D.J. Netto. I think one lap later (Mark) Dobmeier caught on fire and they had to cut the night short. Our thoughts are with Mark and we’re glad to see he’s going to be okay.”

The remainder of the feature was postponed Friday evening and was planned to be run on Saturday, but curfew halted that so Scelzi was credited with the second-place showing.

Saturday started out similar with a heat race win for Scelzi.

“The heat races were weird,” he said. “We started on the pole again and a lot of good guys started at the back. We won our heat race, but missed the feature redraw so we started 10th. We’d go one lap and a yellow would come out; go a lap and a red would come out. We went from 10 th to sixth after finally getting about a six-lap green-flag run. They decided to shorten the race from 25 laps to 20. We just didn’t have the time to get through the field. We got up to third and passed Corey Day for second with two laps to go. The track took rubber and I was running a half a lane down from everybody else. We closed on the leader on the last lap with a lapper in front of us. I just couldn’t get the run I needed and we ended up running second by a couple tenths of a second.

“To have that speed to start the season off, especially going to a place we’d never been to, I feel confident for the season. We have speed and a good balance.”

Scelzi plans to make his season debut in his home state of California this Friday and Saturday when Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico hosts back-to-back nights, including the Mini Gold Cup with the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series on Saturday.

QUICK RESULTS –

March 10 – Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande, Ariz. – Heat race: 1 (1); Feature: 2 (4).

March 11 – Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande, Ariz. – Heat race: 1 (1); Feature: 2 (10).

SEASON STATS –

HISTORIC ECHOS AS CHRIS DYSON TAKES DOMINATING TRANS AM WIN AT NEW ORLEANS; BRABHAM’S RUNNER-UP FINISH GIVES CD RACING ANOTHER 1-2 SWEEP

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 13, 2023) – Chris Dyson seized the lead mid-way through the first lap of the 100-mile Trans Am by Pirelli race at NOLA Motorsports Park and led the rest way to the checkered flag, with his CD Racing teammate Matthew Brabham finishing second, 6.271 seconds behind. Justin Marks finished third, trailing the CD Racing duo by nearly a minute. The event, contested in hot and humid New Orleans weather, marked the team’s second consecutive sweep of the top two steps of the podium and for Dyson was a sweet follow-up to the season opener last month at Sebring where an engine problem sidelined him at the halfway point while battling for the race lead.

“It was a hard day, but another 1-2 for the team and I’m back in the fight for the championship,” Dyson said after climbing from his winning #16 GYM WEED Ford Mustang. The two-time defending series champion noted that he’d been well-served by the intense physical conditioning program he has pursued over the winter months. “You just can’t let up in these cars, but you also need to keep the tires and car ready for the last few laps of the race. And as the driver you need to have the physical resources get everything out of the car. But that’s what makes racing Trans Am so rewarding.”

This weekend the character of the race was set before the first lap was completed. As the green flag waved, Brabham, who won at Sebring after Dyson’s car broke and qualified second at NOLA, drove around the outside of pole-sitter Marks in the first turn. Marks locked up his tires under braking at the next corner, hitting the rear of Brabham’s # 20 GYM WEED Ford Mustang. Dyson, following closely, shot past both of them and into a lead he would never surrender.

Half a lap later Marks locked up his front tires again and shot off the track. By the time Marks scrambled back onto the racing surface Dyson and Brabham had established a three-quarter-minute lead.

“It wasn’t as comfortable as it might have looked,” Dyson said. “Justin is an excellent driver with a very fast car. Matty and I knew Justin couldn’t catch us if the track stayed green, but if we had a full-course yellow it would be a fight among the three of us for the win. All bets would be off.”

Brabham’s Slippery Drama

As it turned out, the track stayed green and Dyson was able to maintain a comfortable margin without overextending his car or himself. For Brabham, who emerged with the championship lead, circumstances proved more challenging. Leaking engine oil found its way back into the cockpit as the race approached its finish.

“The floor was covered with oil,” Brabham reported afterwards. “I’m glad we made it to the end.”

Dyson New Orleans Heritage

This past weekend wasn’t the first Dyson triumph in New Orleans. It wasn’t even the first sweep of the top positions of the podium. Or the first Dyson New Orleans win for a Riley chassis. Even the car numbers were the same! In 1995 the Dyson Racing Team scored a memorable 1-2 finish in the running of the Grand Prix du Mardi Gras, held on a downtown street circuit. James Weaver was first under the checkered flag in the team’s Ford-powered #16 Riley & Scott Mk III, with Butch Leitzinger close behind in the team’s #20 car.

“Winning here 28 years later in a Ford-powered Riley car feels really special,” Dyson said. “It’s been said that history doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes. I’d say in this case it echoes.”

Next Up: Road Atlanta

The Trans Am series next stop is March 23-26 at Road America. A favorite circuit of Dyson’s over the course of his racing career he won Trans Am races there in 2020 and last year, both times from the pole.

NOLA Rebroadcast Schedule

A 60-minute feature on the NOLA race, produced by Greenlight TV, will be broadcast this Thursday at 9:00 p.m. ET to MAVTV’s 22 million North American linear households and 175 million connected devices.

WEC preview: Cadillac seeks to make splash in debut

No. 2 Cadillac V-Series.R team takes Prologue momentum into Sebring opening race
SEBRING, Fla. (March 13, 2023) – The next chapter in Cadillac Racing’s dual series of competition will be written this week with the No. 2 Cadillac V-Series.R making its FIA World Endurance Championship debut in the 1000 Miles of Sebring.
Its sister racecars – the No. 01 Cadillac V-Series.R and the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac V-Series.R – on Saturday will seek to give the iconic brand three consecutive victories in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring in the second race of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.
This past weekend’s WEC Prologue, incorporating four free practice sessions totaling more than 12 hours on the 3.741-mile, 17-turn Sebring International Raceway course, was instrumental in the Cadillac Racing team’s preparation for the opening endurance race Friday starting at noon local and the season in general in the electrified Hypercar class.Media resources

The No. 2 Cadillac V-Series.R will compete in all seven rounds of the WEC calendar, including the centenary 24 Hours of Le Mans in June, and face 10 Hypercar competitors in the eight-hour kickoff event.
Evaluation, exploration and operational practice – key as there are notable differences in pit stop and race procedures compared to the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship — complemented drivers Earl Bamber, Alex Lynn and Richard Westbrook gaining pace through more than 200 laps on the bumpy circuit that originally was a World War II airbase.
The Cadillac V-Series.R topped the time chart in one session with a best lap of 1 minute, 48.429 seconds and was near the top in the others with no down time in its initial outing in WEC spec.
“It’s been a really positive two days. It’s a whole new program, the WEC, and it feels like it. But what a start we’ve made and there is so much more to come,” Westbrook said. “The whole team is just going to get stronger and stronger and I think everyone is excited. The Cadillac is really strong, but we knew that from Daytona, so we have a nice base to work with. There’s a lot to be positive about going into the race week.”
Bamber and Lynn co-drove a Cadillac DPi-V.R to victory in the 2022 Twelve Hours of Sebring to lead a Cadillac sweep of the podium. Lynn is a two-time overall winner (2017, 2022) in a Cadillac DPi-V.R and Bamber has an overall and class win in the Twelve Hours of Sebring. Westbrook co-drove a Cadillac DPI-V.R to the runner-up finish last March.
“I think we have a talented crew and we’re looking forward to going racing,” team manager and strategist Stephen Mitas said.
The 1000 Miles of Sebring will mark the second race for the trio in the new Cadillac V-Series.R powered by a 5.5-liter V-8 normally aspirated engine developed by GM’s Performance and Racing propulsion team paired with the spec energy recovery system. They co-drove to fourth place in the Rolex 24 At Daytona in January.
“Testing is limited so going to Daytona is a good way in race conditions to get the team and drivers aligned and prepared for the WEC season,” Mitas said. “The more experience you get, particularly with a new team, is only going to benefit you and reduce your learning curve.”
The first of three free practice sessions will be held Wednesday morning. The 1000 Miles of Sebring is scheduled for noon ET/5 p.m. CET Friday. The 15-minute qualifying session is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. ET Thursday (12:30 a.m. CET Friday).
The race will air live on MotorTrend with streaming coverage of the race and qualifying on the MotorTrend app. Radio Le Mans will broadcast the race, qualifying and all practice sessions.See the exciting Cadillac V-Series lineupSpectators can view the Cadillac V-Series performance vehicle lineup at the Cadillac display in the midway, including the Escalade-V, CT5-V Blackwing and the CT4-V Blackwing. Hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday.
The CT5-V Blackwing is a Car and Driver 10Best again for 2023: “…the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing is the greatest sports sedan on sale today, if not of all time.”
Additionally, the 2023 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing Sebring IMSA Track Edition, with a special matte black paint in honor of the 12-hour race and a symbol of racing in the dark, will be on display in the Cadillac Corral.
Spectators will also have the opportunity to participate in a Cadillac ride and drive program Thursday-Saturday with the exciting performance vehicle lineup at the track.
What the No. 2 Cadillac V-Series.R drivers are saying
It’s great to back at Sebring, where Cadillac has had a lot of success including our win last year. Now we’re here with a different challenge with a new Cadillac V-Series.R and looking forward to it. The Prologue went well. We were at or near the top of the chart every session – doing long runs, learning the tires and getting in full race preparation mode because there are short practice sessions when we roll back out Wednesday and it’s right into the race. Brand new team in terms of we did Daytona but now this a WEC team with a European-based crew, so we’re all learning. Looking forward to the race.”— Earl BamberI think we’ve built a great car. Us joining the World Endurance Championship is a different form of racing and something we have to adapt to and we’re learning a lot every day. We’ve been building up for this moment for a while and I’m impressed with how things are going. From my side I’m extremely excited to come back to a track where I’ve had loads of success. The personnel we’ve put together are extremely talented and we have to keep building. The car has been reliable and quick, which are the two main ingredients and that’s what gets everyone excited. I think we have a really talented driver crew, a fast car and those are the two bits that are hard to get. Once you’ve got that, the rest comes naturally.”— Alex LynnReally looking forward to Sebring to kick off a whole new era in sports car racing, particularly for the Cadillac entry into the world championship. This will be a slightly shorter race than I’m used to, but different now with the new Hypercar contingent. It will be fascinating, not just for us, but for the fans. I think everyone is really excited to see how that competition shakes out. Obviously, after Daytona, we have a lot of confidence in our car reliability-wise, but we have no idea how we will fare on pace. We have a little understanding how we compare with Porsche, but it’s going into the big unknown with the Hypercars. We’re all so excited and can’t wait to kick this season off.”-– Richard Westbrook

NASCAR CUP SERIES PHOENIX RACEWAY UNITED RENTALS WORK UNITED 500 TEAM CHEVY RACE WIN RECAP MARCH 12, 2023
BYRON DRIVES CHEVROLET TO FOURTH CONSECUTIVE WIN OF 2023 AT PHOENIXTeam Chevy Drivers Take Five Positions of Top-10
William Byron became the first repeat winner of the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season, powering his No. 24 Valvoline Camaro ZL1 to the win at Phoenix Raceway. ·       The win is Byron’s sixth victory in 184 career starts in NASCAR’S premier series.
·       The win marked Byron’s first NASCAR Cup Series victory at Phoenix Raceway.
·       Chevrolet has now won the first four NASCAR Cup Series points-paying races in 2023 with Byron becoming the series’ first repeat winner of the season.
·       This marks the first time since 2001 that a single manufacturer has won the first four NASCAR Cup Series races in a season, which was last accomplished by Chevrolet.·       Byron’s victory marked Chevrolet’s 26th NASCAR Cup Series win at Phoenix Raceway, extending its series-leading record at the track.
·       The winningest brand in NASCAR Cup Series history, Chevrolet now has 837 all-time NASCAR Cup Series victories.
AVONDALE, Ariz. (March 12, 2023) – An overtime finish determined the winner of the NASCAR Cup Series’ (NCS) United Rentals Work United 500 at Phoenix Raceway, and it was William Byron and the No. 24 Valvoline Camaro ZL1 team that came out on top. The 25-year-old Hendrick Motorsports driver proved to be a contender all race long, taking the Stage One win and leading 64 laps en route to becoming the first repeat winner of the season in NASCAR’s premier series.  “I owe the last couple of weeks to Rudy (Fugle, crew chief),” said Byron. “He’s done a really good job strategy-wise, and execution-wise, we’ve done a good job to put ourselves in those positions on the front row with a shot at the end. Thanks to everybody back at Hendrick Motorsports putting together great cars and just doing a great job. It’s a big credit to them, the engine shop, Mr. (Rick) Hendrick and everybody.” As a caution flew with 10 laps remaining in the race, pit strategy shook up the lineup for the late-race dash to the finish. Race winning crew chief Rudy Fugle called Byron down pit road, utilizing a two-tire strategy to give the team a front-row restart position with three laps to go. Taking the green, Byron was scored in the second-position when another caution forced the race into an overtime finish. Hitting his marks on the final restart, Byron took the lead on lap 316 and never looked back; driving his Chevrolet team to back-to-back trips to victory lane.  The winningest manufacturer in NCS history, Chevrolet has now gone four-for-four in NCS wins this season. This marks the first time since 2001 that the same manufacturer has won the first four points-paying races of the season in NASCAR’s premier series, with Chevrolet being the last to accomplish that feat.  The Bowtie brand was a consistent fixture at the front of the field throughout much of the race. Larson drove his No. 5 HendrickCars.com Camaro ZL1 to the Stage Two win, giving Chevrolet its seventh NCS stage win of the season. Four Chevrolet drivers led a combined 280 of the race’s 317 laps. Larson led a race-high 201 laps, followed by Byron (64 laps led), Erik Jones (64 laps led) and Ross Chastain (one lap led).   With four points-paying NCS races in the books, the Bowtie brand has now occupied at least 50 percent of the top-10 in each of the series’ races this season. Posting a nearly dominant weekend, Larson and the No. 5 HendrickCars.com Camaro ZL1 team ultimately took the checkered flag in the fourth position. Alex Bowman drove his No. 48 Ally Best Friends Camaro ZL1 to a ninth-place finish, making the 29-year-old Arizona native the only driver in the series to collect a top-10 finish in each race this season. In just his second start since becoming the fill-in driver for the injured Chase Elliott, Josh Berry (No. 9 Kelley Blue Book Camaro ZL1) took home a 10th-place finish to put all four Hendrick Motorsports Camaro ZL1’s in the top-10. Kyle Busch (No. 8 Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen Camaro ZL1) recorded an eighth-place finish to give Chevrolet five top-10s to round out the series’ western swing.    Chevrolet will look to keep its winning streak alive as NASCAR’s premier series takes on Atlanta Motor Speedway in the Ambetter Health 400 on Sunday, March 19, at 3:30 p.m. ET. Live coverage can be found on FOX, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90. WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 VALVOLINE CAMARO ZL1; RUDY FUGLE, CREW CHIEF, NO. 24 VALVOLINE CAMARO ZL1; AND JEFF GORDON, VICE CHAIRMAN, HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS – Press Conference Transcript
THE MODERATOR: We are going to begin our post race media availabilities. We are now joined by our race-winning crew chief, Rudy Fugle.
You started the race strong, finished with a win. Talk to us a little bit about your race.
RUDY FUGLE: Yeah, no, William did a great restart, got the lead I think after lap one. We set sail and did well.Ended up getting beat off of pit road. Pit stall one had a lot to do with that. Qualifying on the pole was big from them. Outmatched a little bit on pit road, never could get it back. From there we kind of were tighter in traffic, tried to work on it to make it freer. Got way too free in stage three. Got an adjustment on the green flag pit stop. We were okay again, just too far behind. Two weeks in a row we get that caution. Pit crew did a good job of getting us out on the front row. William did an awesome job. Second chance at a restart, did an amazing job, we won the race.
THE MODERATOR: We’ll go ahead and open it for questions.
Q. It was you and the 5 in front today. Without giving too much, what do you think you guys have hit on that have allowed you to have success?RUDY FUGLE: Yeah, just a little bit of everything. Specifically 24 team is focused in the simulation program all off-season. We worked really hard, especially on Las Vegas and Phoenix ’cause they’re super important in the Playoffs. We had fresh information. Run Vegas with four to go, Phoenix obviously the last race of the year, you race them early in the year. Makes sense to work on those. Most of our focus to start with. Hope to take notes from these two races to propel ourselves to the first third, half of the year.
THE MODERATOR: We’re also joined by Hendrick Motorsports vice chairman, Jeff Gordon. We’ll continue with questions.
JEFF GORDON: First let me say how proud I am of this guy, this team. Nobody works harder. All these guys work hard.Over the off-season I came in one day, was it right after Christmas?
RUDY FUGLE: Day after Christmas.
JEFF GORDON: I came to the office, this guy was there all by himself. I’m so proud of this guy and the efforts they’re putting in, see the results.
Q. We saw during the race that Kyle had a very dominant car. Unfortunately couldn’t win. I suppose like in other motorsport categories with your crew chief colleagues you share information, technical information. How identical are the Hendrick cars?RUDY FUGLE: Yeah, if you get down to the nitty-gritty, the last 15, 20% of everything, they’re a little bit different. We work together really well. Cliff and I were chatting about what strategy we were going to do. Open in the chat multiple times if we were going to take four or two, how we were going to do it. Even racing against each other, fully working together. We work together great, all four crew chiefs, all four teams. But, yeah, we prepare the cars. We look at each other’s cars all week long, make adjustments. Each driver is a little bit different. So last 15, 20% is different.
Q. If one Hendrick driver is struggling, you take over the setup of another driver?RUDY FUGLE: Definitely. We made a lot of changes their direction after Friday practice. Saturday morning came in and changed geometry and other things, too, to chase the 5, because they were a little bit better than us, yes.
Q. Jeff, knowing your new position with Hendrick Motorsports, do you still have time to do some races?JEFF GORDON: If I do, please stop me. I like to drive, love to get out there and run laps. I know I can’t be as competitive as what I used to be. I prefer not to race.I’m enjoying this challenge, working with these guys, our marketing and PR group. Obviously Rick has been an incredible mentor to me over the years. On the business side, working with NASCAR, tracks, others in the industry. It’s something I’m dedicating most of my time to these days.I also have two kids. Family stuff, too. I did do a race last year, though. That was fun.
Q. (No microphone.)JEFF GORDON: I did it. It reminded me why I shouldn’t be out there racing (smiling). Took all the fun right out of it as soon as I was two seconds off the pace.
Q. You touched on the two-wheel strategy. Was this strategy talked about before the race or at any point during the last yellow you were saying you might do four wheels or…RUDY FUGLE: Yeah, no, as soon as the caution came out, we were chatting. We have a live chat. We were talking about what we were going to do.Having that openness, racing for a win as teammates, is huge and vital. This week I may have swung Cliff one way, last week he may have swung me a different way at different times. It’s great teamwork.
Q. A conversation you were having actively with William, too?RUDY FUGLE: Yeah, no. We kind of tell him the code word we think we’re going to use for there, make sure he’s not totally against it.We see a whole lot more of the race than he does. We have a whole lot more of the history, so yeah.
Q. You have a little bit of the drama on Friday with them taking the pieces. Do you consider winning a race on a weekend where you have maybe a little bit of a distraction more of an accomplishment or just kind of separate, not in your head at all?JEFF GORDON: You’re looking at me. He won the race. I’ll let him answer it first.
RUDY FUGLE: Yeah, I mean, it’s a test of mental strength. That’s just what it takes to be really good in this series. We have to think about what the task is. We have to focus on this weekend. That’s what we all did.
JEFF GORDON: I’d just say I was proud of these guys. I mean, this organization has a lot of depth. They’ve been through a lot of different experiences over the years. To lean on those in different positions or leadership or crew chiefs that have been around so much, whether you’re a young guy on a team or somebody who has been around, it’s nice to know you can lean on one another through times like that. But I’m probably most proud of these guys went through that, then they went out there. We had the pole, third. The other two guys were fast, just slipped up a little bit. All four cars in the top 10 today.I think that really solidified some of the hype and things that were being focused on on Friday. These guys have speed in the car. There was nothing, not last week, not this week, that was getting them to Victory Lane other than a lot of hard work and great teamwork.
Q. Maybe the consensus over the last few years is that Byron is maybe the third or fourth guy on the team. Can he carry the banner for Hendrick Motorsports? What do you see in Byron that maybe you don’t see in some of the other drivers?RUDY FUGLE: We have four capable teams and four capable drivers of carrying the banner every weekend. Pretty amazing. We see it in different phases.Different things affect race outcomes sometimes: the way certain drivers race, what they’re good at, good at qualifying or not, that kind of stuff.Week in and week out, we see it, we have four capable drivers, four capable teams. That’s amazing. Then William, just he’s the guy that has gotten here by being one of the best at preparing during the week, then you add the experience that he’s starting to get over and over and over now. You’ll see the fruits of all of his hard work paying off. That’s what I’m super proud.
JEFF GORDON: I’ll just add to that. You can look at other driver/crew chief combinations and teams over the years at Hendrick. To me, especially the perspective I have now, it’s just really great to see a team mature, a team grow, a team evolve. You see all the things that they’re doing behind the scenes to get there. They didn’t just show up at the racetrack and all of a sudden, bam, they clicked on it. These guys have had to work really hard to get there.I see a progression with William ever since he came to Hendrick. Got to remember how young he was coming into the Cup Series, so much to learn. Young in racing in so many ways. When Rudy came to Hendrick, the instant connection and chemistry between these two was so obvious. It just took the whole team up to another notch. I think now they’re just building on that. It’s a lot of fun to watch and see.
Q. Bowman scoring four consecutive top 10s, you have to be happy with the consistency?JEFF GORDON: 100%. Blake Harris coming onboard. New combination driver/crew chief. To see them click as early on as they have.I think one of the reasons why that worked, kind of came to, was because the confidence both Alex had in Blake and Blake had in Alex. It’s nice to see that it’s paying off for them on the racetrack.
Q. Josh Berry, you were the first guy up to his car after he finished. What have you seen? It’s a tough situation for him to be in, but just to be able to step in, second start in a Hendrick car, top 10, pretty solid.JEFF GORDON: I’m really impressed with today’s effort. I was on the 9 box most of the race. It didn’t start off so great. To see them just continue to work through changes on the car, changes of the track conditions, just continue to push forward. Then he was mixing it up, man. On those restarts, he was right in the middle, three- and four-wide. I was a little bit nervous because they’re pretty deep in points and needed a solid finish. It was great to see Josh get that. That’s going to build his confidence. I don’t think anybody can explain how difficult a situation this is. I mean, an Xfinity car today could not be more opposite than what the Cup car is throughout the history that I can recall of those things being so different than they are today. To get out of an Xfinity car and hop into a Cup car that’s so different I think is a big, tall task. We put him in a bad situation last week. This week I saw him putting in the effort and the time, the sim, getting fitted in the seat, doing his homework. It really showed up.
Q. Jeff, what was the process like in deciding to have Josh in the car, also having your buddy Rodney Sandstorm at COTA? Who approached who about that?JEFF GORDON: Well, I think Jeff Andrews touched on this this week. Not always, but maybe this really started a few years ago, where you kind of have to have a backup plan. Sort of started with COVID. It’s continued on since then of if something were to happen, a driver could get sick, a driver could get injured, that you have something in place that can happen immediately. We’ve gone down the path of not having a game plan, and it’s really difficult to find somebody. Sometimes they’re already on their way home, already left the racetrack.Have a relationship with JRM, with their drivers, having a backup plan in place. I don’t know that Josh has ever really gotten an opportunity with Hendrick before, so that was a team decision, a lot driven by Alan and who he thought would fit in with their team, personality-wise. I think they’re making the right decision. As far as the road course, I think the road course just opened up the door for should we look at an option that is sort of a road-racing option. We feel confident in Josh, want to keep Josh in the car as much as possible.I raced with Jordan Taylor. He’s very talented. He’s been in our Garage 56 car, showing a lot of speed. Just the right timing, place to be able to pull that off.
Q. Rudy, how much of a threat did you consider Harvick even on Friday?RUDY FUGLE: We recognized him right away. We were doing all our comparing to the 4 and the 5. He might not have felt it or people may not have been talking about him, but we knew, we were watching.I just felt like this was going to be his kind of race, right? You look at that long green-flag run in stage three, with no downforce, a bunch of dirt racers, Harvick wrapping the bottom, and William being disciplined. Discipline for running and being really good, which Kevin is amazing at. A bunch of guys that aren’t afraid to slip and slide and figure out where the grip’s at.Yeah, they did great. They’ve been good this year, so we’re going to have to contend with them a lot.
Q. Jeff, how much of a concern is having parts taken, even if it’s for further evaluation, especially in this era because of the single supplier issue that the penalties can be significantly more severe?JEFF GORDON: I can tell you it was weighing on all of our minds coming into today. Certainly will continue. We had some conversation, will continue to have conversations, with NASCAR. Every situation is sort of unique, but this is a more unique one than I’ve seen in a while where there’s been a lot of communication back and forth on this particular part, especially for this racetrack because they did a parity test in the wind tunnel.I think it really opened up the door for some miscommunication. I don’t want to go any further than that. We’ll continue to just share all the facts and be transparent with NASCAR as we have been so far.
Q. William and Rudy, second year in a row this 24 team is the first team with multiple wins. Last year you got that second win at Martinsville. This year earlier. How important is it for you guys to get this early start? What can you do to keep this consistency going?RUDY FUGLE: Yeah, I think you got to get the wins while you’re hot. You got to capitalize. Super good. Our focus is nothing different now. Hit the reset button and how do we do it again.Put the hard work in every single day, keep grinding. That’s our focus.
WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, I mean, I think last year, even though we won early, we didn’t really know the car or understand the car. We were kind of just adapting to what we had. We were just making the most of an unpredictable situation with the entire field. There was a lot of attrition in the races, a lot of just weird things that were happening.I feel like now it’s strength on strength. It feels different. It feels like we’re more consistently towards the front and we’re leading laps.We just want to focus on our processes during the week. I think our processes this week were kind of frustrating because we didn’t really get to do the things we wanted to do. Everyone was a little tired. We did that Charlotte test. There was a lot going on on the outside. It was a little frustrating going into today, but it’s cool to see that we can overcome those things and still get a win.
THE MODERATOR: Jeff and Rudy, thank you.
We’ll continue with questions for William.
Q. What does it mean to you to continue to put the 24 in Victory Lane and carry that legacy on?WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, I mean, when I first started out, it was a lot of pressure. Going into my rookie year with not having any Cup starts, I don’t think you really understand the magnitude of that shift.I think everyone prepares you for it, going from Xfinity to Cup, but the level this is, it’s so different, so many details that go into it. That was a lot of pressure.I think once we got a win under our belt, once we kind of got some consistency going, you stop thinking about that, start thinking about how can we just build this team into something that we want long-term.It’s just cool to have a group of guys around me that we’ve really built from the ground up with Chad, then when Rudy took over, brought a couple more people in that I was really comfortable with and trusted, like my spotter. It’s just been a good progression.
Q. Can you give us your assessment of the new car, how you felt it changed over last season.WILLIAM BYRON: New? Like aero package?
Q. Aero package.WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, I thought it was really difficult to drive. Like from an objective standpoint, I know we were competitive, but I didn’t think we could pass any better. There’s still some work to do there with something going on with how tight they get in traffic.I mean, yeah, they were certainly hard to drive. Think that’s a good test to see who is the best out there. Kyle is probably the most naturally talented. I think it just shows, like, guys were having to drive their cars and manage that. It made for a really difficult challenge inside the race car.How many times I slipped, how much slip was too much, how much was enough to keep going fast. That was a good challenge. It kind of I think put our car control on display.
Q. Can you take me through the last restart. High lane, all of a sudden it seemed to thrust forward. Did you get a good push from Reddick, were you unstable?WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, so the restart, the launch went well for me. I had a really good launch. No wheel spin. At that point I was just focusing how can I get through the gears, how can I side draft Kyle. When they all pulled down to the apron, the outside guys at a bit of a disadvantage because of the distance. Trying to stay as close as I could there. Then it’s who can beat each other to the corner without hitting the wall. We both got in there deep, both were up the track. He held me really tight there through the middle of one and two, off of two. There was just enough grip up there. I think I was just far enough up on him I was able to stay in it.We were obviously dragged back. I got that big push from Tyler down the backstretch. That was huge. He drilled me, but we’re not going that fast. It was nice. That kind of got me out in some clean air.
Q. You’ve won two races in remarkably similar fashion. Was it weird going through that? Feel like déjà vu out there?WILLIAM BYRON: I wasn’t counting my blessings. I was kind of like, man, it went so good last week, I’m probably going to end up crashing here (smiling). When you have that level of commitment, you know you have on a green-white-checkered to come out the other side. It’s either going to go really good or not.Yeah, I don’t love winning races that way. It’s very stressful. It’s a lot of tactics going on with the restarts. But it’s fun. It’s a good challenge for us because you’re all tired, you’re all into that long-run mode mentally, then you have to have a pit stop and somehow reset and get into how do I get a good restart.
Q. Looking ahead to November, what were some things you learned today that will benefit you?WILLIAM BYRON: I mean, the cars are going to change a tremendous amount. That I kind of keep in the back of my mind.As far as the balance goes, I thought we had the balance really good to start the race. I was sliding around a lot. Seemed to be sliding less than everybody else.Just when I got back in second, the dirty air is so significant, I just started to get tight. I started to contribute my issues to that. Then we just got the back out of the track.Yeah, we had to try something to try to close that gap. It just seemed like there was a bubble there. As soon as I was hung up in second, I just focused on trying to be consistent and maybe we get to lap traffic and something would happen.I think overall throughout the race, there’s still some work to do myself to just know what I need, then also managing the car. The brakes were kind of hot. I did a lot throughout the race messing with the brakes. I just got ’em too hot doing some stuff. Need to work on some of those technique things.
Q. You said earlier the car was difficult to drive with the new aero package. That’s for everybody. Is there a possibility you go maybe and have a meeting with NASCAR technical department to make improvements, proposals?WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, for sure. We have meetings almost every weekend. That’s been a big thing since probably the middle of last year. We start having meetings with NASCAR. It’s been really productive.Yeah, I definitely think we need to kind of objectively look at was this a better race or not. That’s really what it comes down to. From my standpoint, yeah, it tests me a lot more, but there’s still some element we have to figure out with how tight the cars are.I think, yeah, we’ll keep working through that. I’m open to anything. I just want us to have options as drivers. I want it to be hard to drive, but I also want to be able to pass.
Q. (No microphone.)WILLIAM BYRON: I don’t know. I just kind of see what they bring to the track, adapt that week, yeah.
Q. Was there much of a concern that you and Larson were going to wreck each other on the last restart?WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, I mean, in my situation having a win, him not having a win yet, like, I assumed he would be more aggressive. But my counter was that I got a win, I’m going to do whatever I can, too. It was a game of chicken a little bit.Yeah, I mean, I have a lot of trust in Kyle. He’s an amazing driver. We’ve gotten to know each other off the track. I feel like we always communicate well.Yeah, I don’t know how to answer that. I wasn’t really thinking through that situation. I was just kind of going wherever he was, trying to be a little bit better.
Q. I asked Rudy and Jeff about everyone in the Hendrick camp seems capable of carrying the banner. Maybe consensus in the past was you are the third or fourth guy. As the years go on, do you believe you’re capable of carrying that banner? Got to be validation you are maturing.WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, I think people around me have always kind of helped me understand that I’m young. Max and my dad, just everyone, my dad especially, he’s a big stats guy. He’s like, Man, you’re young. Just give it some time.I’m very impatient, so I like things to happen quick. That’s how it happened for me coming up through. This level is so different. Took a lot of homework, a lot of details. I think the fact that I started later than most driving was a little bit — it took some time to bridge that gap at this level. Now that gap is bridged obviously.Yeah, I just feel like it’s a constant evolution, just trying to continue to get better.
Q. You ran with Larson all week in Vegas last week, today as well. What does the two wins do for your team’s momentum and confidence?WILLIAM BYRON: Yeah, I mean, I think Cliff and Rudy work really well together. I think all the crew chiefs do. But Cliff and Rudy sit next to each other in the meetings. They spend a lot of time. They kind of came in the Cup Series at the same time. Cliff had one year on Rudy. They came in with a new driver, new situation.I feel like they get along really well. They’re very different. I feel like there’s some camaraderie there. It’s not a surprise we’re both running well. I wouldn’t be surprised if all four of us are running well. Everyone communicates really well.I think in some ways Kyle and I’s driving style, I try to adapt to whatever the setup is, and I think he kind of does the same.
THE MODERATOR: Thanks, William.

Burton Finishes 35th at Phoenix

March 12, 2023

Harrison Burton and the No. 21 DEX Imaging team posted a disappointing 35th-place finish in Sunday’s United Rentals 500 at Phoenix Raceway.

Burton started the scheduled 312-lap race from 27th place but struggled in the early going, dropping to 32nd place, one lap down, at the end of the first 60-lap Stage.

Burton lost another lap in the second Stage, and a strategy play – taking the wave-around on the race’s second caution – to regain one of those laps didn’t work as the No. 21 Mustang was passed again by the leaders in the closing laps of that Stage.

The DEX Imaging team didn’t fare any better in third segment of the race as Burton spun with 10 of the scheduled 312 laps left to run, bringing out the caution flag after a long green-flag stretch of racing.

He lost three spots due to the spin and the time spent on pit road for repairs, and wound up finishing the race but in 35th place.

Burton and the No. 21 team now turn their attention to next Sunday’s Ambetter Health 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 VALVOLINE CAMARO ZL1 – Race Winner QuotesOn the two-tire call from crew chief Rudy Fugle: “I owe the last couple of weeks to him. He’s done a really good job strategy-wise, and execution-wise we’ve done a good job to put ourselves in those positions on the front row with a shot at the end. Thanks to everybody back at Hendrick Motorsports putting together great cars and just doing a great job. It’s a big credit to them, the engine shop, Mr. (Rick) Hendrick and everybody. It’s cool to have Valvoline back on the car with a really historic-looking paint scheme, so it’s nice to get into Victory Lane.”

More on the win: “Thanks to Valvoline and all the sponsors we have. It’s a great day for us. We weren’t the best car at times. We were really good at the beginning, and it was nice to see it come back our way. It definitely was a top-four car. Rudy made a great decision there and a great pit stop. Execution… that’s what we’ve been good at.”

Importance of late pit stops the last two weeks and get on the front row for restarts: “It’s big. You’ve got to have a chance there on the front row to really have clean air on your nose and make the right moves. We were able to get on the front row there and stay on the outside of Kyle the second time and have a good enough restart. Those green-white-checkers, you can either wreck or win. We’ve been on the good side of them for a couple of weeks.” Momentum of two wins in a row: “It’s great. This team has been working really hard. We didn’t want to stop last week, and we just wanted to keep it going. We have more work to do but hopefully this week is a little bit calmer and we can relax a little bit.”

TEAM CHEVY POST-RACE QUOTES:Kyle Larson, No. 5 HendrickCars.com Camaro ZL1Finished: 4th“We got lucky with the one caution, and the team made a great call to take two tires and get us out in the lead. Restarts are just tough. I felt like I ran William up pretty high and expected him to lose some grip, but he did a really good job of holding it to my outside and clearing me down the back. Yeah I’m pissed off but a great fight by the team, a great car and way better than we were here last year. It’s a long season, but hopefully we’re in the final four when we come back here in November and can have a run similar to that with speed and try to execute a little bit better in the end.”
More on the late restart: “I thought I drove in far enough to at least that if he chased me in I thought he would get too high and into the marbles. I think that top lane just got a little bit better the last 50 laps or so. I didn’t run in far enough and ended up getting beat. It’s a bummer, but William again executed the last two races a little bit better than I did. Congrats to him and their team. We’ll try to keep these good runs up.”
Josh Berry, No. 9 Kelley Blue Book Camaro ZL1 Finished: 10thHow are you feeling after today? “It was a really solid day for the No. 9 Kelley Blue Book Chevy team. We were able to improve a lot from what we had last week. We were able to stay on the lead lap basically the whole race. We had a couple of runs in there that were really good. A couple runs where we fell back a little bit, but it’s just all part of a learning experience for me. These races are so long and I need to be able to learn this car a little bit better where I can give Alan (Gustafson, crew chief) a little bit better direction on how to help me. Towards the end, we found that we were a little bit on the free side of our better runs. At the end there, we were probably going to finish 15th or 16th, which I was still pretty happy with. Obviously had the cautions there and we executed a couple of really good restarts there and was able to get a top-10.”
Alex Bowman, No. 48 Ally Best Friends Camaro ZL1Finished: 9th “It’s been since 2016 I think since we’ve finished in the top-10 here, so happy for that. I have to figure out how to get better here. Obviously I think our car is stronger than that when you look at our teammates. Fundamentally, I have something messed up. Just have to keep working on it, but proud of my No. 48 Ally Best Friends Chevy team. Good points day.”

“I get to the finals so few times, you have to give it all you got. I am usually a little nervous, but not really too bad. I couldn’t explain why my car started darting around today but the guys figured it out. That last run it was straight as an arrow,” said Welch who has been to the finals three times in his career and picked up victories each time. “Aaron’s a good friend of mine and a great competitor. I knew that he’s good. I just knew I had to give him my best. The chips were going to fall where they may and this time the win light came on for me.”

In an exciting side-by-side drag race to start the day, Welch would drive around Jesse Alexandra for his bid into the semifinals. Alexandra would leave the starting line first but end up crossing the finish line at 7.769 seconds at 177.44 mph falling short to Welch’s 7.623 at 184.35. Welch would go on to face David H. Davies in the semifinals. Welch would have a squirrelly ride but be able to hold on for a 7.708-second run at 170.62 mph to beat Davies’ 7.760 second pass at 178.59.

Stanfield made his way to the finals by first picking up his third elimination victory of the weekend when he defeated AJ Berge in the quarterfinals. Stanfield would lay down a 7.736-second pass at 177.42 mph to defeat Berge’s 7.847 at 177.49. The victory gave Stanfield a bye into the final round, he’d take the Janac Brothers COPO to a 7.755 at 177.32 before coming up short in the finals.

In addition to picking up the win and setting the speed record, Welch also won $1,000 for beating Stanfield thanks to the Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown Bounty Program. Welch now has the $1,000 bounty on his back heading into the Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway, April 28-30.

“I am going to pay for my fuel which will be great. Golf great Greg Norman has a quote that I have always kept in the back of my head. ‘I would rather be the hunted than the hunter.’ I agree with that,” Welch said. “You know you are going to be at your best when your competitors give it their best. If you’re a real competitor, you want to win when they give it their best, and I agree with that.”

CAMRIE CARUSO MAKES MOST OF GATORNATIONALS

GAINESVILLE, FL (March 12, 2023) —- The start of her sophomore season on the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series tour was a mix of emotions for Camrie Caruso, the 2022 NHRA Rookie of the Year. Driving the Right Trailers Chevrolet Camaro in her second NHRA Gatornationals, the young driver from Mooresville, North Carolina, was looking to get her season off to a strong start with her new KB Titan Racing team and teammates. Right off the trailer on Friday Caruso rocketed to the provisional No. 1 spot after the first qualifying session earning three valuable qualifying bonus points and putting her Chevrolet Camaro at the back of the pack for the second session. Caruso made another solid run and ended Friday as the No. 2 provisional qualifier.

On Saturday two more passes were added to the run sheet and Caruso made her quickest run of the weekend in the final session, a 6.547 second pass at 211.33 mph to head into race day against teammate Dallas Glenn. In the opening round on Sunday, it was a battle between the two most recent Rookies of the Year and Caruso knew she needed to make a strong move off the starting line. When the Christmas Tree flashed Caruso hammered the gas cutting a nearly perfect .005 to get the jump on Glenn. Unfortunately, her Right Trailers Chevrolet Camaro was not able to keep up with Glenn’s RAD Torque Systems Camaro as she was forced to push in her clutch midway down the track.

“The car set up is great and I’m more comfortable than I was last year,” said Caruso. “The experience I got last year also really helps. We came off the trailer with a really good run. In the first round I knew I had to get off the line first. That .005 gives me a lot of confidence and I can’t wait to get to the Arizona Nationals. We have a good race car and I’m just thankful and excited for the season. There are still a few things we are still working on. I can’t thank this KB Titan Racing team enough.”

The Gatornationals week was more than the race as Caruso joined the NHRA Fanfest on Wednesday night signing autographs for an estimated crowd of 5,000 race fans followed by a tequila tasting event at Hotel ELEO  with sponsor Tequila Comisario on Thursday night.

“We packed a lot into our time in Florida,” said Caruso. “I raced the Baby Gators last weekend in Top Dragster and then we tested. I loved the FanFest on Wednesday and the Tequila Comisario tasting event at Hotel ELEO was amazing. Hotel ELEO is beautiful and I can’t wait to come back. I met so many fans throughout the week and this weekend it was great. I can’t wait to get to Arizona and turn on some win lights.”

Caruso will be back on track at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, the site of her first ever round win. The event will kick-off on Friday, March 24 and will be broadcast on FS1 throughout the weekend.

COUGHLIN WINS GATORNATIONALS FROM POLE POSITION IN FIRST EVENT OF THE NHRA SEASON

Starting Line Advantages Were Key To Early Success For Elite Motorsports Team
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 12, 2023) – Troy Coughlin Jr. raced his Elite Motorsports JEGS.com Camaro to the first Pro Stock win of the 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series today at the 54th annual Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals. This is the third Pro Stock win of the talented driver’s career and the first time he’s won an event with his grandfather, Jeg Coughlin Sr., and his father, Troy Coughlin Sr., in attendance.
Coughlin kicked off race day from the pole position with the fastest and quickest pass of his career when he laid down a stunning run of 6.515-seconds at 212.29 mph. Matching his elapsed time was his teammate and five-time world champion Erica Enders who landed in the No. 2 spot based on mph. Cristian Cuadra achieved a new personal best elapsed time during qualifying with his pass of 6.527 at 211.06.
“To win with my grandfather here today is pretty surreal,” said Coughlin. “He’s the man who pretty much started it all for us as far as drag racing goes. And he’s built an iconic brand. It’s just fun. This morning I was thinking, ‘The chief’s coming today.’ And it fired me up. It’s an honor to have him here.”
A malfunction with Enders’ car gave her rookie teammate Jerry Tucker the first-round win of his Pro Stock career and Coughlin outpaced Pro Stock legend, Larry Morgan. Tucker and Coughlin were the only two Elite Motorsports drivers to advance past the first round.
In the quarterfinals, Tucker left a tick too early against veteran Pro Stock driver Greg Anderson. Coughlin got the starting line advantage over Deric Kramer and held on to that lead for the round win. In the semifinals, Coughlin defeated Dallas Glenn on a holeshot thanks to another great light.
In the final heat of the day, Coughlin powered his Elite Motorsports machine into the winners circle against Pro Stock up-and-comer Mason McGaha.
In the FuelTech NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by Type A Motorsports, Mason Wright qualified No. 10 in a stacked category with a fantastic run of 5.828 at 245.49. He cut a solid light in the first round of eliminations against Doug Winters but it did not prove to be enough to turn on the win light.
The Elite Motorsports team will head to Phoenix in two weeks for the NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Motorsports Park, March 24-26.

ASHLEY TAKES EXPERIENCE, MOTIVATION FROM GATORNATIONALS

GAINESVILLE, FL (March 12, 2023) — The 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series started today in earnest at the 54th NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. For championship contending team Justin Ashley and the Phillips Connect Toyota Top Fuel dragster powered by National Debt Relief the take-aways from the first weekend might not be reflected on the points sheet. The 2020 NHRA Rookie of the Year made three qualifying runs with two passes on Saturday moving Ashley up in the 16-car field. Ashley rolled into race day as the No. 9 qualifier and a match-up with Mike Salinas.

In the opening round Ashley got the jump off the starting line with a .038 to .087 reaction time advantage and his Phillips Connect Toyota Top Fuel dragster powered by National Debt Relief was side-by-side with Salinas as they raced towards the finish line. As the 12,000-horsepower Top Fuelers charged towards the finish line Salinas was able to pull away and get out in front of Ashley’s 3.754 second, 330.88 mph run. Ashley’s day was over, but the event was not a total loss for the team that finished No. 4 in the world last season.

“We have a championship team”, said Ashley. “We expect to win. But this is racing. Although we didn’t accomplish our goal this weekend, we have a lot of data and information that we can take and apply moving forward. It’s a long season with plenty of opportunities. I have the utmost confidence in our team and look forward to getting back behind the wheel in Phoenix.”

This was the first race with National Debt Relief on Ashley’s Top Fuel dragster and the new addition has Ashley excited for the future both on and off the track. Adding another major corporation to the team’s marketing arsenal along with Phillips Connect, Toyota, Lucas Oil, Mac Tools and KATO Fastening Systems gives the fourth-year team owner and driver confidence and a level of stability.

“Phillips Connect is the reason we are in the position we are today,” said Ashley. “I have so much gratitude for their dedication, support and commitment to the success of this program both on and off the racetrack. Now, to have the honor of representing National Debt Relief, one of the largest debt relief companies in the country, is truly humbling. I love working with those who are in the business of helping others and that is exactly what they do. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent National Debt Relief and so many of our great partners.”

To be able to bring in National Debt Relief and start working with one of the largest debt relief companies in the country, who’s helped hundreds of thousands of people is really something that I’m privileged to be a part of. I’m just happy that I can be a resource to people out there who need help.”

The next event on the schedule will be the NHRA Arizona Nationals, which is slated to host its final NHRA national event the weekend of March 24-26.

HART WRAPS UP GATORNATIONALS EARLY AFTER PEP BOYS WIN

GAINESVILLE, FL (March 12, 2023) — Yesterday Josh Hart and the R+L Carriers Top Fuel dragster took home the $80,000 top prize as the Pep Boys Top Fuel Allstar Callout specialty race winner. During his post-event press conference, the 2021 Gatornationals winner talked about how humbling the sport of drag racing can be. Through two days of qualifying Hart steadily improved entering race day as the No. 7 qualifier on the strength of his Allstar Callout winning pass which was also his final qualifying run of 3.748 seconds at 331.53 mph. In the first round Hart drew five-time Gatornationals winner Tony Schumacher.

The R+L Carriers Top Fuel dragster team and Hart were looking for their fourth consecutive winlight of the weekend in the first round of race day. Crew chief Ron Douglas continued his tradition of starting the race as the first pair of Top Fuel dragsters and on a track with the best conditions of the weekend the team was ready to keep their winning streak alive at Gainesville Raceway.

Hart’s team made their quickest run of the weekend flying down the right lane in 3.693 seconds at 335.40 mph, both career best marks. Unfortunately, Schumacher was off the starting line first getting his 12,000-horsepower dragster out in front and holding off a charging Hart at the finish line. For Hart, the two-time national event winner, and Pep Boys Allstar Callout champion the Arizona Nationals in two weeks will be his next chance to pick up his first win of the 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series.

“I said it yesterday about how humbling this sport can be. I was at the top of the mountain yesterday and today I didn’t do my job,” said Hart. “Ron and the guys gave me an amazing race car and I didn’t take advantage of the opportunity. This will only motivate me and I wish the Arizona Nationals started tomorrow. We won the Pep Boys Callout and now we will start focusing on the Camping World Top Fuel world championship. There are a lot of races left in the season.”

After the first race of the season Hart will head to the second race in tenth place in the Top Fuel Camping World points. The NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wildhorse Park Motorsports Park will begin on March 24 affording Hart and the R+L Carriers Top Fuel dragster their next chance to hit the track.

CHEVROLET IN NHRA AMALIE MOTOR OIL NHRA GATORNATIONALS GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA TEAM CHEVY RACE REPORT March 12, 2023 TEAM CHEVY CAPTURES PRO STOCK WALLY AT TRICKY GATORNATIONALS GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA (March 12, 2023) – The season-opening AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at the legendary Gainesville Raceway proved tricky for many Team Chevy drivers. However, Elite Motorsports’ Troy Coughlin, Jr., driving his JEGS.com/ElitePerformance Chevrolet Camaro SS, came through the day with clean runs and raced to his third Pro Stock victory in his eighth final round.
“We’re feeling great,” said Coughlin, Jr. “The whole team and everybody at Elite is working so hard. You can tell the guys in the engine shop and dyno room worked really hard over winter. Everybody at Elite has worked extremely hard between grooming the cars and having everything ready to go. We have eight cars fielded. It’s a lot of work, and there’s a lot of new faces on our team, and everybody’s tremendously got everything running extremely well. We’re lucky to have wonderful partners and wonderful people here, and we’re excited to start our 2023 season.”
For the John Force Racing foursome, Round 2 proved tough. Both Austin Prock (Top Fuel) and Robert Hight (Funny Car) faced mechanical issues, leading to being shut off on the starting line. “Coming into the first race of the season this Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac team struggled a little bit,” noted Brittany Force. “We got a chance to play in the All-Star Callout and made it to the semis where we were taken out. We qualified well. We ran a .69 which is really awesome for us. We made a handful of good runs. On race day we got beat in the second round. We just didn’t push the car enough. We ran a 3.75, and Salinas had a 3.69. This weekend wasn’t for us. That round wasn’t for us. We pack up and we move straight to Phoenix, and we’ll try it again there.”

2023 NHRA GATORNATIONALS IN THE BOOKS FOR JOHN FORCE RACING

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 12, 2023) – The four John Force Racing hot rods ended race day at the season-opening Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals with quarterfinal finishes at Gainesville Raceway. Brittany Force and Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac Chevrolet dragster and John Force and the BlueDEF PLATINUM Chevrolet Camaro SS leave the weekend fifth in the points standings in their respective categories. Austin Prock has the Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist dragster in seventh while Robert Hight and the Flav-R-Pac / Cornwell Tools / AAA Chevy are in eighth.
John Force, who was consistently quick through qualifying, got lucky in the first round of eliminations when Dave Richards had to shut off before taking the tree. The BlueDEF Camaro would smoke the tires mid-track for only a 6.527-second pass at 99.27 mph. The BlueDEF Camaro Chevy would run out of luck in the second round. Force would make a full pass at 3.942 seconds and 329.91 mph but it wouldn’t be enough for Chad Green’s 3.934 at 321.10.
“Long week here in Florida. Great crowd to start the season. Not the way we’d want to end the day but it’s the first race and we showed some good strides,” Force said. “Danny Hood and Tim Fabrisi, they took advantage of testing and we figured some things out and really came out here looking good. Time to head to the next one.”
Just moments after receiving her 2022 NHRA world championship ring, Brittany Force handled the Monster Energy dragster to a 3.692-second run at 333.99 mph to win her first-round matchup against Keith Murt who ran 4.100 at 227.46 after running into trouble mid-track. The Monster Energy dragster would be down on power in the second round. Force would handle her hot rod to a 3.758 at 332.75 but come up short to Mike Salinas’ 3.699 at 334.32 who would go on to win the race.
“Coming into the first race of the season this Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac team struggled a little bit. We got a chance to play in the All-Star Callout and made it to the semis where we were taken out. We qualified well. We ran a .69 which is really awesome for us. We made a handful of good runs,” Force said. “On race day we got beat in the second round. We just didn’t push the car enough. We ran a 3.75, and Salinas had a 3.69. This weekend wasn’t for us. That round wasn’t for us. We pack up and we move straight to Phoenix, and we’ll try it again there.”
Robert Hight and the Flav-R-Pac Chevy secured the No.3 qualifying spot in their final run of qualifying and picked up where they left off going into race day. Hight would have the quickest run of the event at 3.843 seconds and 334.98 mph defeating John Smith who shut off early for a 4.477 at 102.07. An issue with the throttle would plague the Flav-R-Pac Camaro in the second round. Hight would pull up to the starting line without doing a burnout hoping for the best. When it was time to hit the throttle, there was no connection, and the Funny Car wouldn’t make it off the line giving eventual race winner J.R. Todd the victory.
“Not the way you want to end a weekend. Mechanical problem right at the starting line. But we’ll get it figured out,” Hight said. “I’m not worried, that first round run, that’s where we’re at. We’ve got some new guys on the team and everyone is working really hard. We’re finding our groove but we’re right there. We’ll be ready for Phoenix.”
After a less-than-ideal qualifying effort putting the Montana Brand / RMT dragster in the No. 12 spot, Austin Prock opened race day with a 3.706-second pass at 331.53 mph that, combined with his .040-second reaction time on the starting line, gave him the holeshot victory over Millican’s 3.705 at 325.85 with a .113 reaction time. Prock wouldn’t have the chance to run Leah Pruett in the second round. The Montana Brand / RMT dragster would have a mechanical issue after the burnout that would force the team to shut off before taking the tree.
“We came out good in the first round which I was very proud of, but we stumbled in the second round with mechanical issues,” Prock said. “It was still a great outing for this Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist team being a new team. We will come back stronger in Phoenix.”
The NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series next heads to Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park near Phoenix for the NHRA Arizona Nationals March 24-26.

TOYOTA QUOTES

STEVE TORRENCE, Capco Contractors Toyota Top Fuel Dragster, Torrence Racing

Final Result: Final Round

How do you feel about your performance on this opening race weekend?

“Great weekend overall. Really a good way to start the season. Don’t know what it did, but we’ll keep working at it. This is a huge step in the right direction for the Capco Toyota dragster. I’m really excited and really optimistic about what’s in store because this thing just keeps getting better with every lap. We just need to figure out the game plan on it and our tune-up then I think we’re going to be a contender for certain.”

What did you feel on the last run?

“Just a good lap, but it was probably a little soft in the middle. Cloud cover coming and going, you don’t know what to do. Those guys (Scrappers Racing) have been pretty stout all day, but we just went up there and ran our own race and maybe it wasn’t enough.”

J.R. TODD, DHL Toyota GR Supra Funny Car, Kalitta Motorsports

Final Result: Final Round

What happened on the final run?

“Running really well all day and then in the final round, it’s running really well again and didn’t see him (Matt Hagan) and spun the tires and stayed with it and it blew up.”

How do you feel about starting off the season with a final round appearance?

“Really good. We tested really well. The car is definitely more consistent than what we’ve had in years past. I feel like it responds to what the crew chiefs are telling it to. Definitely shows that it has a lot of potential so it definitely has me excited for the rest of the season. Starting out in the final round, it’s always nice to finish off a final round, but can’t really complain starting off the season like this compared to last year.”

DOUG KALITTA, Mac Tools Toyota Top Fuel Dragster, Kalitta Motorsports

Final Result: Semi-Finals

How was your race today overall and how do you feel about the start to your season?

“I was hoping to make it to the final for sure. The car was running strong all day and just super excited about the way things are going so far. Everyone is working together really well and the crew chiefs are really happy with what they’re seeing. Kind of the way it was in testing as well so I’m glad we were able to roll it into the first race. I don’t know what happened on that last run, but it was unfortunate to just smoke the tires. You know drag racing, it happens. Looking forward to getting to Phoenix.”

Your first round win was a career-best pass. Tell me about that run.

“That was a cool run. For whatever reason, I was trying to steer it to the middle and it was drifting to the center towards the end. I could tell I wasn’t going to go over or anything, but it was just one of those things where I knew this thing was really running. We really appreciate everything Toyota does for us and look forward to having a good season.”

Avedisian Wins Finale in Du Quoin After Hard Battle with Meseraull

Meseraull P16 following contact with Avedisian, McDermand runner-up from 12th

DU QUOIN, IL (March 11, 2023) – The winningest driver in Series history is back in Victory Lane. Jade Avedisian captured her third career Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series presented by Toyota Feature win Saturday night in only her second career start in the Southern Illinois Center.

It didn’t take long for the young Californian to find success with her new team at Keith Kunz Motorsports, scoring the $5,000 check in her second race piloting KKM’s signature Mobil 1, Spike/Toyota #71. But en route to finding that near-instant success, Avedisian was tasked with going head-to-head with one of the most accomplished indoor racers – Thomas Meseraull.

Meseraull, the 42-year-old open wheel veteran and two-time winner in the Center, was the first to challenge 16-year-old Avedisian after she got out to the early lead from the pole. Meseraull gradually ascended from his fifth-place starting spot into third by Lap 10 and was immediately met with a chance to overtake both cars in front of him.

With a head full of steam as he crossed the stripe on Lap 11, Meseraull swept by Kyle Jones through Turns 1-2 on the top side and made a bee-line for Avedisian in 3-4. Using the same maneuver – right-rear tire against the cushion and throttle to the floor – Meseraull powered around Avedisian for the lead and began to set his own pace.

“Early on, I could see that the track was going to start moving up,” Meseraull said. “It was time to go. I was faster than the guys in front of me.”

“The first 10 laps, I was around the bottom, and I kinda felt like it was gonna go away; just wasn’t sure when,” Avedisian said about leading the opening laps. “I felt it [go away], and then [Meseraull] got by me. It was good to run his pace for a few laps.”

Though the opening laps were hectic, the race’s torrid pace was soon cooled by the first caution flag on Lap 14; Friday night winner Cannon McIntosh had rolled it over in Turn 3, retiring him to the pits with external damage from the wreck.

Meseraull handled his first two restarts well, keeping Avedisian at bay behind him. He soon opened up a large gap to the rest of the field, stretching the lead out to over a second-and-a-half at one point before the yellow was displayed again with 11-to-go. It was then that Avedisian executed her plan to retake the lead.

Avedisian got a great restart and stayed right with Meseraull as the laps dipped under 10-to-go. With six laps left, Meseraull bounced hard off the cushion in Turn 4, upsetting the car enough for Avedisian to close-in on his rear bumper.

“Once we got out there, me and T-Mez, I feel like we were about the same speed,” Avedisian said. “I had a really good restart, I think it was the third restart, I was able to chase him down a little bit and decided when to slide him.”

With a lapped car in the bottom lane directly in front of him, Meseraull swung it to the top side into Turn 1 and got over the lip of the cushion, sending him into the marbles and leaving the track beneath him open to Avedisian. She took full advantage of the room, bounced off the lip at the apex of the turn and got a great run out of Turn 2.

In an effort to power out of the cushion and get back in the groove, Meseraull stayed in the throttle, picking-up the front-end of the car into a wheelie out of Turn 2. When he came back down, Avedisian’s nose was there and the two made contact, sending Meseraull around on the backstretch.

“He got over the curb and I was already half-sliding him, trying to get by,” Avedisian said. “He came down, obviously to get out of the curb, and we just hit. It was just a racing deal on that one.”

“That was unfortunate,” Meseraull said. “Lapped traffic is tough here, and I was struggling to get by [Avedisian]. I picked up a little bit of a miss in the 7x, and so my entry speed was a little bit on-and-off, and I kinda got it in above the curb.

“The thing flew the nose [up] and Jade just shoved it in there, because that’s what you do in Midgets, apparently, and it damn near got me upside down. But hey, that’s part of racing.”

Meseraull was sent to the tail of the field under caution while Avedisian assumed the lead with three laps remaining. One solid restart and 12 corners later, Avedisian drove under the checkered flags to seal the victory.

“Just be patient, you only have three laps, and try to hit your marks,” Avedisian said of her mentality coming back to the green. “I definitely didn’t have the best restart. We think the tire got cold or something, and it didn’t fire-off as well. But it was good enough to keep us out front.”

Chase McDermand crossed the stripe in second, coming from 12th in the Mounce/Stout Motorsports #40 – a remarkable turnaround for the team that failed to qualify for the Feature Friday night. Kyle Jones came home third, staying in the top-five the entire distance and matched his best career finish with the Series.

Daniels, Kopp Pull Off Double Doubles at DAYTONA Short Track II

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 11, 2023) – Dallas Daniels (No. 32 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT) kicked off his 2023 Progressive American Flat Track championship campaign in near-perfect fashion, completing the second half of the season-opening double win with another sensational ride in Saturday night’s DAYTONA Short Track II presented by Daytona Dodge at the Flat Track at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. Daniels was already a legitimate title contender as a rookie a year ago. Early indications suggest he’s that much stronger now with a year’s Mission SuperTwins presented by S&S Cycleexperience under his belt. The Estenson Racing Yamaha ace got away off the line in third, running in close quarters behind early leader Jarod Vanderkooi (No. 20 JMC Motorsports/Fairway Ford Indian FTR750) and Jared Mees (No. 1 Indian Motorcycle/Rogers Racing/SDI Racing FTR750), with Thursday runner-up Brandon Robinson (No. 44 Mission Roof Systems Indian FTR750) right in his tracks. Robinson made an early exit from the fight for the win, getting into the airfence and losing several positions in the process. Daniels slipped up the inside of Mees a little less than three minutes into the ten-minute-plus-two-lap Main to take over second, just as Davis Fisher (No. 67 Rackley Racing/Bob Lanphere’s BMC Racing Indian FTR750) closed in to make it four-rider fight at the front again. Daniels then spent the next four minutes stalking Vanderkooi, looking up the inside and around outside, while generally applying the sort of pressure that might just open a door straight through. He finally found the gap he was looking for with 3:30 minutes remaining on the clock, striking up the inside as the leaders encountered a wave of lapped riders. Daniels met little resistance once into the lead, stretching out an advantage that finalized as a 2.069-second margin of victory in the end. “It was tough – Jarod was running a really good race,” Daniels said. “He was being patient – he was really easy on the throttle and wasn’t making any mistakes. I had to search. I wanted to sit there for a little bit. After I got off the line, I was all right with where I was, and I was paying attention to everything. I wanted to stalk him for a while, but then it was time to go. “A double at Daytona is crazy. It’s unbelievable. A big thanks to the whole Estenson Monster Energy Yamaha team. We had a great year last year, and to start off the year with two wins in Daytona is insane.” Shortly after Daniels took over the lead, Fisher slashed his way past Mees to complete the “new guard” podium line-up in third, joining winner Daniels and second-placed Vanderkooi. Reigning champ Mees came away with his second fourth of the double-opener – a marked upgrade over how his prospects may have looked earlier in the week. Meanwhile, Daniels’ teammate, JD Beach (No. 95 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT), logged a second fifth. Robinson recovered well enough from his early drama to finish in sixth, one spot ahead of Briar Bauman (No. 3 Parts Plus/Jacob Companies KTM 890 Duke), who was forced to claw his way up to seventh from outside the top ten. Four-time DAYTONA ST winner Sammy Halbert (No. 69 Martin Trucking/Castrol Yamaha MT-07), privateer Kayl Kolkman (No 98 B&L Plumbing/Rod Lake Yamaha MT-07), and Royal Enfield factory man Johnny Lewis (No. 10 Moto Anatomy X Powered by Royal Enfield 650) completed the top ten. Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER Defending Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER Kody Kopp (No. 1 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-F) doubled up in Daytona, delivering a second dose of domination on Saturday night. Clearly in a class of his own at the venue, Kopp pulled off another sweep, repeating his Thursday trick of topping practice, qualifying, his Heat, the Al Lamb’s Dallas Honda Challenge, and most importantly, the Main Event. Kopp successfully weaved his way through the opening lap chaos to secure the lead three turns into the race. And while Chase Saathoff (No. 88 American Honda/Mission Foods CRF450R) did everything in his power to cling onto Kopp’s rear wheel, a little more than a minute in, the race for victory was effectively over. Kopp ultimately worked his advantage up to over five seconds before taking a drama-free checkered flag. “It’s just two for 18,” Kopp said. “We’ve got 16 more rounds, so there’s a lot more work to do. You can’t judge a season off two races at a track that really suits my style. I grew up riding a lot of indoors in the Pacific Northwest, and this was kinda like that. Thanks to my whole Red Bull KTM crew – this is a dream way to start the season for sure.” After losing touch with the leader, Saathoff was gradually reeled in by ‘22 championship runner-up Dalton Gauthier (No. 79 D&D Racing/Certified KTM 450 SX-F), who first had to fight his way past Trent Lowe (No. 48 American Honda/Mission Foods CRF450R) and Justin Jones (No. 91 NRC Racing/Elder Trucking KTM 450 SX-F) to slide into third. Gauthier and Saathoff then swapped the second spot back and forth, squaring one another up in quick succession before the charging Gauthier finally stole the position away for good. Saathoff held on for the final spot on the box by a scant 0.084 seconds despite having to fend off a late challenge from new Turner Honda teammate Lowe. Kopp’s teammate, Max Whale (No. 18 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-F), battled past the impressive Jones to complete the top five. Next Up: The world’s premier dirt track motorcycle racing series makes its first-ever trip to Senoia Raceway in Senoia, Georgia, for the inaugural Yamaha Senoia Short Track on Saturday, March 25. “We only tested for a couple days so getting off to a good start was important for us,” said Stanfield, who still has the $1,000 Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown Bounty program target on his back as the winner of the season-ending Texas NHRA FallNationals. “Friday we learned a few things on our runs and today it came together. This whole group is working really hard. We won the last race last year but that didn’t really give us momentum coming into this race. We just really put a lot of work in over the off-season and it looks like it has started to pay off this weekend, we’ll see how tomorrow goes.

In the first round, Stanfield would go 8.659-seconds at 175.73 mph to send Ingram home for the weekend. Stanfield followed up the victory with a 7.738 pass at 178.54 driving around Ricky Hord’s 8.016 at 167.24. Stanfield will have AJ Berge waiting for him on Sunday.

Veteran tuner but first-time Flexjet Factory Stock competitor AJ Berge took two round wins today and will go into Sunday of the Gatornationals with growing confidence. Racing the iconic look RAMCHARGER Dodge Drag Pak Berge will be looking for three more win lights tomorrow.

“We’ve been struggling since we started testing here on Tuesday. Getting a hold of this tune-up has been a challenge but we’re starting to see the fruits of our labor and starting to get the bugs worked out. We had good power, and we have a good team. Winning any race for me is just such a huge accomplishment. It’s a very humbling experience for me to be out here.”

Another driver who is excited to be advancing to Sunday is David H. Davies, driver of the Save Our Allies Dodge Drag Pak. Davies started his own team this season after a season under the Don Schumacher Racing banner and the Kirtland, Ohio, resident is eager to try and earn his first Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown Series national event.

“We came in here with a new team,” said Davies. “We’re going through the normal new team stuff, but everybody’s doing a great job we wrenched on the car before round two and it got where it needed to go. It’s the Gators so we’re happy to be running on Sunday.

“We have a little bit more work to do on the car. It’s been behaving great for two weeks. We’ve pretty much got this thing figured out, the ‘Gator air’ is causing us a little bit of grief along with everybody else in the class,” Davies continued. “If we figure out the ‘Gator air’ we will be in good shape.”

Sunday will feature the third round of the Gatornationals Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown Series with drivers hitting the track at 11:50 a.m. the final round should commence at 2:20 p.m. The Gatornationals will be broadcast live on FOX from noon – 3 p.m. ET.

BRITTANY FORCE AND MONSTER ENERGY NO. 1 AT SEASON-OPENING GATORNATIONALS

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 11, 2023) – In front of a sold-out crowd, Brittany Force and the Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac Chevrolet dragster earned the No. 1 qualifying position at the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway on Saturday evening. John Force and the BlueDEF PLATINUM Chevrolet Camaro SS will start from No. 2 with Robert Hight and the Flav-R-Pac / Cornwell Tools / AAA Camaro in No. 3. Austin Prock and the Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist dragster will start their day from No. 12.
For the 43rd time in her career, the second time at Gainesville Raceway, Force will start race day from No. 1 after her 3.699-second pass at 336.99 mph from a weather-ridden Friday held through Saturday’s two sessions. Force and her David Grubnic tuned hot rod would stay consistent in the final two qualifying runs with a 3.744 at 335.48 that also won her the first round of the Pep Boys All-Star NHRA Callout and earned the team three bonus points.
In the Pep Boys Callout semifinals, after selecting to race against Josh Hart, the Monster Energy dragster would smoke the tires almost immediately. Force would watch Hart, the eventual Callout winner, drive around her as she coasted to an 8.884.
Force would have redemption in the final qualifying session going 3.718 seconds at 336.15 mph, again the quickest of the session earning the Monster Energy team another three bonus points.
“Overall, this Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac team got the No. 1. It was a bummer to lose out on the All-Star Callout. We felt good going strong going into it, we made it to the semis, but we got beat. Now the bigger focus is race day tomorrow. We put today behind us, and we start all over again going into race day and we’re at the top spot,” said Force who will race against Keith Murt in the first round of eliminations. “We were low of that last session and that’s outstanding, running in different conditions, and still being able to run low. Those runs are awesome, and we benefitted from getting that extra run for being in the Callout so it helps us out on race day.”
John Force and the BlueDEF Camaro were consistent through qualifying. Already with a 3.898-second pass from Friday, crew chiefs Danny Hood and Tim Fabrisi would string together a 3.936 run at 329.91 mph and a 3.878 run at 329.91 mph. Both would earn the legendary driver bonus points for a total of seven through the weekend. Force’s efforts would land him the No. 2 qualifying position.
“I was riding on a high coming in here after the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame. Then you get out here and you realize what your job really is and that was to get into the show,” said Force who matches up with Dave Richards first round. “Good two days of qualifying for this BlueDEF Chevy. We got in the show, did our job, we aren’t low but we got No. 2 so overall it’s good and we’ll see what happened tomorrow.”
Coming into the day in No. 5, Robert Hight and the Flav-R-Pac Camaro shook things up on Saturday. They’d shake the tires in the first session for only a 5.564-second pass at 126.65 mph but it would be their final run that put them in the No. 3 spot. Hight would handle the Flav-R-Pac Chevy to an impressive 3.879 run at 333.99, the third-quickest pass of the session earning them a bonus point.
“We were down on power that first run of qualifying then we had a little too much on it earlier today. That second run was good for this Flav-R-Pac team. We’re back. There’s still more out there, too,” said Hight who races against John Smith first round. “I’m not worried, feeling good about race day. If we had had one more run in those similar conditions today, we probably would have gone low. That’s good for tomorrow.”
After a 3.779-second pass at 324.44 mph on Friday afternoon, Austin Prock and the Montana Brand / RMT dragster would run into some trouble during Saturday qualifying. Prock would lose traction and have to shut it off to go only 4.564 at 164.89 which would also lose him the first round of the Pep Boys Callout to Hart. The final session would be more of the same for the Montana Brand team, smoking the tires early to go 7.915 at 112.36.
“A little bit of a rough start on the weekend for this Montana Brand / RMT team. Missed on the power level on Friday but made a nice clean pass and luckily it got us in the show,” said Prock who will take on Clay Millican first round. “Going into the Callout we were pushing in the first run today. It did smoke the tires, but it was really close to going and if it would have went it would have ripped off low E.T. We looked a little more mixed up than we actually are. I’m not really worried about tomorrow. I know we have the best people upstairs in the lounge and one of the best crews out here. I’ll be on my game and I know they will and we’ll see how our cards fall.”
The Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway will continue with two eliminations on Sunday slated for a 10 a.m. start. Television coverage of the event continues with a dedicated Pep Boys All-Start Callout show at 10:30 a.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 (FS1). Sunday race day action will be at noon ET on FOX Broadcasting Network.

Josh Hart Pockets $80,000 for Pep Boys All-Star Callout Win

Gainesville, FL (March 11, 2023) — Ocala, Florida resident and Top Fuel standout driver Josh Hart drove his R+L Carriers Top Fuel dragster to Pep Boys Top Fuel Allstar Callout victory and an $80,000 payday on Saturday at Gainesville Raceway. It was Hart’s first appearance in a big money specialty race and the 2021 Gatornationals winner took out Austin Prock, Brittany Force and Mike Salinas enroute to the win to start the 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season.

“It’s a huge, huge accomplishment for our team, we have prepared like no other through December, January and February,” said Hart, in the Norm Froscher media center. “To go right out and win a specialty race right off the trailer is awesome. This R+L Carriers crew are the ones that should be sitting in the seat talking about this win. I’m just the jockey that gets to hit the gas. All the credit goes to the team. This is obviously off the charts awesome. But you have to not take anything like this for granted because it can go away just like that. Savor the moment.”

<2310 -13897.JPG>

“I’ll just say that nice guys don’t finish last,” said Hart, a two-time Top Fuel national event winner. “When you go up against Prock, you gotta be deadly on the tree and I was off my game a little bit in that first round. It was my first competitive pass with this R+L Carriers Top Fuel dragster. I was kind of nervous about staging. (Crew chief) Ron Douglas and the team saved me on that one.”

“In round two against Force when she called me out, I think everybody was expecting that. That becomes a kill them with kindness type of situation. I left on her with a 40 light. With Salinas you know, he’s run some crazy numbers in testing and you always have that in the back of your mind, but I’m just glad that left on him. Ron and team again get the credit.”

With the Gatornationals looming tomorrow, Hart, the No. 7 qualifier, will face eight-time Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher in the first round. The third-year professional has a 1-1 record against the five-time Gatornationals Top Fuel winner. Last year during the NHRA Countdown Hart outran Schumacher at the betway Nationals in Charlotte in the first round. Heading into race day Hart does not feel additional pressure to win his second Gatornationals.

“No pressure, but I am 100% more relaxed because again, once you have the confidence and you’ve taken your sled down the track a couple of times you’re like, ‘I got this,’” said Hart. “It’s when things are going sideways and crazy and you’re pedaling and then you start psyching yourself out. So those guys on my team, they’re awesome. Like I said, they were the ones that should be sitting right here, not me.”

Race week started on Wednesday night for Hart and his R+L Carriers and Burnyzz Speed Shop team as he hosted the first Gatornationals FanFest at his shop in Ocala, Florida, sixty minutes from Gainesville Raceway. Nearly two dozen NHRA competitors joined Hart and NHRA legend ‘Big Daddy’ Don Garlits for a free autograph session along with a huge car show and live music. An estimated 5,000-7,000 fans attended the first time event. The support Hart has received from his local community has not been lost on the Huntington, Indiana, transplant.

“Ocala has been amazing to me not just from the business support, but with the racing community,” said Hart, who started his first business with $300 and a dream. “We planned on having 75 people in our hospitality and this is our first time doing hospitality and I counted 200 plus. The local support is off the charts. I’ve never seen anything like not only here at the racetrack but people that are now stopping into the shop just for merchandise or just to you know, meet me and I’m like, man, I’m a janitor if you want me to clean up the messes around here. Just awesome support locally.”

The first round of eliminations will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET and Hart will have his R+L Carriers Top Fuel dragster ready to take on one of the toughest fields in Gatornationals history. The sixteen qualified drivers are members of multi-car, multi-million dollar operations. Hart has fastidiously built his racing operation on his own until last year when he brought on partner fellow Floridian Chris Armstrong. The influx of financial support and business acumen has helped Hart take his program to the next level.

“We partnered with Chris Armstrong of Armstrong Homes and this car does not want for anything. We will do whatever it takes to make sure this thing is equivalent to all the multi-million dollar teams. The confidence comes from what happened to me last year. I took it for granted and I was like ‘Hey, I’m gonna come out and have some fun,’ but it’s not fun. It’s a business, so this year, when I show up, I want to start trying to enjoy every single moment.”
