Giovanni Scelzi Earns Back-to-Back Runner-Up Results in California and Arizona

Inside Line Promotions – PEORIA, Ariz. (March 2, 2020) – Giovanni Scelzi produced a pair of top-notch performances in his family owned sprint car during the last two weekends.

Scelzi earned a runner-up result on Feb. 22 at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, Calif., before duplicating that result last Friday at Canyon Speedway Park, which hosted a Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader that featured more than 50 drivers.

“We progressively got better throughout each night,” he said. “It’s good to move forward like we did both nights and get a strong finish since we have a lot of new pieces with our team.”

Scelzi made his sprint car season debut at Keller Auto Speedway, where he qualified eighth quickest before placing second in a heat race to narrowly miss a spot into the dash. Scelzi capped the night by maneuvering from ninth to second in the feature.

“We made changes throughout the night to get better and almost came away with a win,” he said. “It was a solid night overall and something we could build on.”

The team took that momentum into Canyon Speedway Park, where Scelzi made his debut on Friday. He advanced from fifth to fourth place in a heat race before winning a qualifier. That ranked him 11th in event points to garner the 11th starting position for the 25-lap feature.

“The track rubbered up around Lap 12 and we were up to second around that point,” he said. “You need to really get in traffic or have the leader make a mistake to be able to get the lead once the track gets like that. It was another solid night with a second-place finish.”

The weekend concluded on Saturday with Scelzi winning a heat race. A fifth-place finish in a qualifier was followed by a B Main win.

“About four laps to go in the B Main I started getting a vibration,” he said. “I thought it might have been a tire going down or a shock, but when we came in it turned out to be a mechanical problem so we had to call it a night early.”

Next up for Scelzi is an ARCA Menards Series event this Friday at Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, Ariz.
